The economy may have been down in 2009 and through some of 2010, but if there's any sign of a rebound via increased acquisitions, 2011 is certainly looking up. Cisco just recently picked up Inlet, AOL picked up Huffington Post and now HTC is making a "strategic investment" in Saffron Digital, a company that's heavily staked in digital multi-media delivery. The London-based company is an obvious play for HTC. The world is becoming cloud-based, and multi-media content consumption is definitely on the rise. According to Peter Chou, CEO of HTC: "Saffron Digital has developed an incredible expertise... Read more...
Right from the start, Sony has been one of Blu-ray's largest fans, and also one of the company's pouring the most money into marketing the format. Many people assumed that Blu-ray was a format created by Sony at first, but it's actually not. Nevertheless, Sony is now helping to advance Blu-ray into the next level, teaming with Tohoku University in order to develop a blue-violet laser with a 100W output. This may not sound too important on the surface, but it holds a lot of promise. What kind of promise? According to reports, this invention could lead to 1TB optical discs. That's a fair bit larger... Pundits have been predicting that the iPad could seriously threaten Amazon's Kindle since Apple's slate device was first announced, but this new quirk is a first. Amazon has updated its iPhad reader software with support for a select group of books that incorporate audio and/or video material. This multimedia content isn't available on any Kindle hardware, which means Amazon opted to first support a feature on a competitor's platform rather than waiting until its own devices were ready to ship. At present there are only 13 titles available at the usual price of $9.99, including five travel books,... Read more...

Gateway just took the wraps off a new line-up of gaming systems and multimedia-ready desktop systems.  The offering ranges from their FX gaming-targeted models, to the DX mini-tower, SX (small form factor), and ZX all-in-one series systems.  All models ship with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, which is a nice touch and will come in handy addressing the rather stout system memory build-outs that are configured with the systems.  The FX models are your standard gaming PC offering but with some all new, swank stylings.  Gateway offers two builds to customize for this machine, ranging... After Toshiba showed a prototype of its JournE tablet computer at the IFA electronics fair in Berlin, many are wondering if Toshiba will beat Apple to the tablet computer market. Thus far, Apple has remained mum on the subject of a tablet computer, despite many rumors and supposed sightings of a possible device. Toshiba’s JournE multimedia touch-screen tablet, or Mobile Internet Device (MID), weighs less than a pound and has a 7-inch touchscreen. It has a brushed aluminum shell. Running on Windows CE 6.0 Pro (now called Windows Embedded Compact) with a Toshiba interface, the JournE tablet has 1GB... Read more...
While Netgear's probably best known for its WLAN routers, the company has recently delved into home networking. To that end, the latest kit is actually quite useful for those looking to make this multimedia more like a networked pool of content and less of a standalone segment on a single PC's hard drive. The Home Theater Internet Connection Kit is a Powerline-based solution designed to turn your overlooked electrical outlets into high-speed Internet and home network connections. The bundle, which took home a 2009 CES Innovations Award earlier this year, has finally reached the "shipping" stage,... These days, it's tough to think of a storage company that has yet to dabble in the multimedia HDD space. LaCie has done it (a few times over), Seagate has done it, and now LG has done it. But we have to say, LG's probably looks better than all the rest. The new XF1 is a 500GB drive that functions as a media portal, boasting a USB interface as well as an HDMI output to direct material straight to your HDTV. It can understand AVI, Xvid, DAT, MPEG, VOB, MP3, WMA, OGG, WAV, AAC, LPCM, JPEG, BMP and a slew of subtitle formats, Unfortunately, LG has neglected to include an Ethernet jack and a Wi-Fi socket,...
