The Android Market now has movie rentals. One problem for those who take the popular step of rooting their devices: those devices can stay home, as they won't be able to view any of the movies. End users attempting to rent a movie from the Android Market even get a clue as to why, based on the specific error message they receive: "Failed to fetch license for [movie title] (error 49)." That's right: it's about licensing and the threat of piracy. Vudu might be on to something with its new promotion: "Stay in. Rent four movies for the price of 1 gallon gas!" At today's prices for movie tickets, concession snacks, and the cost of gas for getting to and from the theater, a family of four could easily spend upwards of a $100 for a night out at the movies. In recent years Apple has “accidentally” revealed upcoming products and services on a fairly regular basis.  They do this either in their on-line store, or sometimes just in parts of their own software that aren't unlocked until a revision comes out.That would seem to be the case with the new iTunes movie rental service: “Movie rentals could be coming to the iTunes Store, if an apparent slip-up by Apple is any indication. Digging around for a good movie on a rainy weekend, like we've been having up here in the Northeast recently, can be a challenge for sure.  Team Ars thinks brick and mortar movie rentals are going the way of the dino and we'd have to agree.  Netflicks sent me an application in the mail recently... Think I'll check that out fo-sho because Comcast's OnDemand selection is pretty dang weak... Video stores are outdated and video-on-demand has a lot of growing up to do.
