In what is an incredibly pleasant surprise, Apple and Google released a joint statement stating that the two companies have agreed to drop all of the ongoing patent litigation between them pertaining to smartphones. "Apple and Google have also agreed to work together in some areas of patent reform," said the statement, according to Reuters. In March, Google hired former Apple evangelist Guy Kawasaki to help reinvigorate the Motorola Mobility brand after the search giant acquired the company, and although it’s hard to say what exactly Kawasaki has contributed to the effort, he posted Motorola Mobility’s new logo on his Google+ page. Motorola’s logo has always been cool, with a stylized “M” inside a black, red, or blue circle, and Google has left the “M” intact with the new logo. And the patent wars continue. A judge in Wisconsin dismissed Apple’s case against Google’s Motorola Mobility wing. District Judge Barbara Crabb didn’t believe she had the legal authority to hear the case. At issue is whether or not Google has engaged in unfair licensing practices. The contention is that Google is using its patent portfolio (bolstered significantly by its Motorola Mobility acquisition) to essentially gouge companies like Apple and Microsoft by demanding excessively high royalties.
