Walt Disney Co has agreed to purchase George Lucas's Lucasfilm Ltd and its Star Wars franchise for $4.05 billion in cash and stock. About half of the purchase price will be in cash. Disney will also issue about 40 million shares at the closing of the deal. After the deal closes, Lucas will become the second-largest individual holder of Disney shares with a 2.2 percent stake in the company. Disney's Chief Executive Bob Iger has said the company plans to release at least three more films in the Star Wars series. The most recent Star Wars movie, Revenge of the Sith, was released in 2005. A group of high-powered tech companies has been slapped with a class action suit for conspiring to artificially keep employee wages low. The companies being sued are Adobe, Apple, Google, Intel, Intuit, Lucasfilm, and Pixar. Sound familiar? It should. These companies, with the exception of Lucasfilm, were investigated by the Department of Justice for the same reason, and in September each avoided litigation with the DOJ by agreeing to change their ways on the matter. Although the agreement with the U.S. government did not include an admission of guilt, that doesn't save the companies from fending... Read more...
Lucasfilm has backed off the cease-and-desist demand it had made to Wicked Lasers, creator the of Spyder III Pro Arctic. Admittedly, the device sure reminds us of a lightsaber, but according to the letter that was sent to the Wicked Lasers' CEO, as long as the company puts a disclaimer on any pages that are graced by the Pro Arctic, they will drop the demand. The letter, from David J. Anderman, General Counsel for LucasFilm, stated that based on the publicity and statements that Wicked Lasers had made, it was clear that "The media and public has come to realize that Lucasfilm would never endorse... Back about a month ago, Hong Kong-based Wicked Lasers introduced a new blue laser. This new handheld toy, built from a Casio projector, emits 1W of cerulean laser beam goodness. That's enough to burn holes in various substances, permanently blind yourself (or the neighbor's cat), and according to Wicked Lasers, the Arctic Spyder III Pro has a range of over 100 miles. At $199, it's a veritable bargain, particularly considering that the company's second-most-powerful laser, the Fusion Series S3 Spyder, is $999 for a paltry 500mW. Lucasfilms, however, is not impressed. Ol' George's legal team took... Read more...
You want IOPs?  Got that... You want Petaflops?  Check.  Blades?  Yeah we got a few of those hanging around too... next to the fiber-optic shelves.  News.com has the 411 on the kind of power it takes to run a state of the art production house like Lucasfilms.  A couple of those racks ought to do the trick keeping ol' HH with 99.999% up-time. Wonder if the boys over there ever donate their left-overs? "Inside the data center in San Francisco's Letterman Digital Arts Center, Lucasfilms director of IT operations Kevin Clark stands in front of a rack of the company's... Read more...
