The Internet I grew up on was filled with "LOLs" and, on occasion, the more obscene "LMAO" (or "LMFAO" is something was particularly humorous). These were the days of AOL and CompuServe and Prodigy and NetZero and any other mainstream Internet service I've neglected to mention. But oh, how times have changed. Persistent connections via broadband are fairly commonplace, and that LOL I've seen a million times? It's no longer vogue. That's according to data compiled by Facebook, which has more users than all those aforementioned services combined did back in the day. I'm not saying Facebook is correct... When it comes to the video game industry, no other game comes close to the success, and install base, that League of Legends has. Developed by Riot Games and released back in 2009, the multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game is estimated to boast around 67 million monthly players and according to Riot, their success is because of the company’s focus on player experience over revenue that, according to market research firm SuperData, could net them $1 billion in 2014. An example of this approach to business would be the World Championship Series tournament. At the WCS 2013 championship,... Read more...
In a world in which its corporate communication team wasn't apparently being run by two monkeys and a sack of hammers, Microsoft executives would've taken the stage yesterday and delivered a concise, official explanation as to whether or not used games will run on the console. In point of fact, everyone thought they did. Wired's exclusive report yesterday purported to have the full scoop on how this situation would be handled. Specifically: Wired asked Microsoft if installation would be mandatory. “On the new Xbox, all game discs are installed to the HDD to play,” the company responded... Read more...
It's not often that we can use LOL in a story without throwing integrity out of the window, but leave it to Google to enable such a luxury. The search giant has just announced that it will be "expanding the Internet domain space." In 2008, ICANN announced a program to expand the number of generic TLDs (think .com, .org, .edu), developed through its bottom-up, multi-stakeholder process. Given that expansion, Google decided to submit applications for new TLDs, which generally fall into four categories: trademarks, like '.google,' domains related to our core business, like .docs, domains that will... A Pew Internet and American Life Project study shows that not only has text message speak reached schoolwork, so has Jerry Yang-ish lack of capitalization!Teens may spend a lot of time texting and IMing, but they don't consider those short exchanges to be writing. If it's not assigned to them through school, they have a hard time thinking about it as legit. These are among the findings of a national phone survey of 700 young people (ages 12 to 17) and their parents conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project and the National Commission on Writing last fall, the results of which were... What's everybody doing at work?  According to Patricia Wallace, a Johns Hopkins University professor and author of "The Internet in the Workplace: How New Technology Is Transforming Work," we're goofing off by looking at all sorts of things on the internet. How much are we slacking? About a fifth of our working time is spent engaging in personal activities. Seems low.  A recent survey by online compensation firm Salary.com showed about six out of 10 employees in the United States acknowledged wasting time at work. About 34 percent listed personal Internet... Read more...
Perhaps based on the brouhaha over the iPhone battery replacement plan, which some have said, because it was not unveiled until after the iPhone went on sale, is "lawsuit-worthy", AT&T is making sure you know absolutely everything about your iPhone bill - such that the bills themselves run into so many pages that forests are being threatened.  As you enjoy your weekend, ponder this bit of humor: while the iPhone may be the master of the digital experience (for now), dead trees come in for a flogging, as AT&T's iPhone bills are quite impressive in their own right. We're starting to... Read more...
