Location-based apps and gaming is surely the "next big thing," and Sony looks to be riding that wave right along. The company, along with Skyhook, has this week announced that Skyhook's Core Engine will be embedded in the next generation portable entertainment system (codename: NGP) from Sony Computer Entertainment. The NGP shook up the gaming universe earlier this year, and while a lot of details remain to be sorted (including a price), this detail is a mystery no more. It'll be able to keep tabs on your location if you opt-in, and it will better enable gamers to enjoy location-aware games and... Read more...
Location-based services just might be the buzzword of the hour, and as mobile communications grow, we think this will become more and more the rule rather than the exception. Location-based apps aren't uncommon to find these days; in fact, we'd say most social networking apps are already location-enabled, and more and more apps are picking up on the trend. While privacy is obviously an issue, those who "opt-in" stand to gain a whole new level of functionality by allowing an app to know their location. One of the biggest issues that still plague phones and navigation devices that are equipped with GPS chips is indoor reception. Go under a bridge, or inside a tunnel, or inside of a building, and you'll probably have a hard time keeping a decent reception lock. It's a frustrating experience, and now that phones are being used more and more as true navigation devices, it's a growing problem that really needs a solution. Skyhook Wireless has been working on this for awhile now, with their Core Location Platform providing indoor reception on tons of phones today. The solution uses a combination of... Read more...
Selling Macs at a limited number of Best Buy locations seems to have turned out to be a good idea for both companies.  That's why Best Buy executives have leaked word of a new plan that would test the waters in other markets.“The plan would effectively double the number of Best Buy stores carrying Apple's computer line at the end of 2007, where rough figures placed a healthy array of Macs in approximate 230 to 270 locations."Even with prospects for a slowing economy, we believe Mac demand can keep going strong given new products," Reitzes wrote in his note to clients. "The key question into... Read more...
