So, this is interesting. Evidently, making $1.6 billion in pure profit in a quarter isn't enough to justify keeping 27,000 on the payroll. It's obviously never that easy, nor that cut and dry, but HP is choosing a quarter where it profited more than some companies will ever gross to suggest that job cuts are in the pipeline. The company's most recent quarterly earnings have hit, and restructuring is at the top of the priority list. AMD's initial layoff announcement yesterday implied that the dismissals would occur across the company's global sales force. While that may still be true, it has become clear that AMD has slashed its PR and marketing departments in particular. The New Product Review Program* (NPRP) has lost most of its staff and Director of Product Planning, Carell Killebrew, who played an integral role in rescuing AMD's GPU division after the disaster of R600, also got the axe. It may be a done deal, but some former Palm employees aren't singing a positive tune after the HP acquisition. In many cases where one company takes over another (or just buys another to integrate), at least a few positions are eliminated. There's usually never a need for two CEOs, and some of the duplication simply can't be dealt with unless some folks are cut. It's an unfortunate truth, and considering just how huge both Palm and HP are, you had to expect that something like this would happen.
