It's easy to get so wrapped up in the hustle and bustle of the holiday shopping season that we forget what this time of year is all about. That's why there's a thing called "Giving Tuesday," which follows right behind Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It's a day of giving thanks and giving back, and that wasn't lost on NVIDIA CEO and co-founder Jen-Hsun Huang and his wife Lori, who together donated $1 million to City Year's San Jose/Silicon Valley chapter.  City Year is a national non-profit organization that partners with public schools to provide full-time targeted intervention of students... Nvidia's GPU Technology Conference (GTC) kicked off this afternoon with company CEO Jen-Hsun Huang delivering the signature keynote. Nvidia typically uses the keynote to announce new projects, technologies, and initiatives, or to demonstrate new architectures, but today's event was something of a let-down. The event started off positively enough with a discussion of the GTX 690 and some performance highlights from the GK104 (Kepler's) debut. Jen-Hsun followed with a discussion of how Kepler moves the bar forward compared to Fermi, and is capable of handling scientific workloads that dwarf those... Read more...
If you've paid attention to quarterly earnings reports from the major computer OEMs, you've likely noticed that the hard drive shortage this fall had an impact, but not a disastrous one. Companies like Intel reported that manufacturer inventories were substantially affected as company's held off on restocking to see what prices would do, but net sales only fell modestly. The GPU market, on the other hand, seems to have taken a hit. Nvidia has stated that its Q4 results were hurt by the hard drive shortage, something AMD also mentioned in its Q4 results. We didn't break it out initially -- AMD's... Read more...
Thanks to yesterday's announcement, we know that NVIDIA will be pushing out Tegra chips annually, or at least that's the plan at this point, but what about GPUs? Like the title says, the next big thing coming down the pipeline according the NVIDIA's CEO Jen-Hsun Huang will come along sometime next year, and it's codenamed Kepler. Kepler will be manufactured using a 28nm process technology and provide users up to four times the double-precision floating point performance per watt of NVIDIA's current-generation Fermi GPU architecture, which is the foundation of... While there are only a select few devices that currently sport NVIDIA's Tegra processor, the GPU giant obviously hasn't stopped R&D on their series of SoCs. For the uninitiated, the various flavors of Tegra integrate an ARM processor core, with a GPU, and northbridge and southbridge functionality within one chip. Tegra and Tegra 2's low power consumption coupled with HD video playback capabilities--among other features--make them ideal candidates for smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices. One problem, up to this point, however, is the lack of products... Read more...
A few months ago, NVIDIA first told us about their plans to organize a massive event called NVISION that focused on all things in the visual computing field. NVIDIA planned to take over a number of major venues in downtown San Jose, including the convention center and a number of adjacent hotels, and invite experts and celebrities from the high-performance computing, gaming, video, movies, and graphics fields, to participate. An ambitious plan to say the least. Tonight we have our first glimpse of NVIDIA’s NVISION '08 show.   Make sure you check out Tricia Helfer of the TV series... Read more...

NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang is either drinking deep on the cool-aide or he knows something we don't.  On NVIDIA's earnings call yesterday Jen-Hsun offererd some insight into brighter days ahead for AMD.  With all the buzz we've been hearing about Phenom FX processors on the horizon, maybe the pump is being primed up for an AMD CPU come-back? "Huang noted on the call that Nvidia’s motherboard graphics processor business “was affected by the significant drop in AMD’s CPU sales in Q1,” but that “we do expect AMD to regain share in Q2.” Added Huang: “We are seeing the sell-through of AMD...
