The ability to see and capture thermal images may seem like it’s not all that interesting at first blush, as selfies and food pics don’t necessarily look all that great when snapped with an infrared camera, but if you sit and think about it for a minute, you can start imagining more than a few use cases. Checking for this or that when doing home improvements? Looking for a lost pet or child at night? Need a quick and handy tool in a number of professional environments? And so on. FLIR is a company that has developed a “personal thermal imager”, a camera that slots onto an... Read more...
Conan O’Brien is developing a taste for tech-based humor, and on tonight’s show he (gently) sent up iOS 7. Today of course is the day that Apple’s latest major overhaul to its mobile operating is available for public download, and Conan decided to update his iPhone on the air, against the advice of his faithful sidekick, Andy. “You should really be careful, because the new updates can frequently be very buggy,” warned Andy. The man is a prophet. Here’s what happened: Maybe the problem was that Conan wasn’t using an iPhone 5 (what generation is that thing,... Read more...
The Apple rumor mill is at full bore today, and the latest rumor surrounds Apple’s upcoming iPhones. According to Digitimes, industry sources in the supply chain (from Taiwan) indicate that a pair of new Apple phones are in the offing for 2013. Apple has reportedly told its supply chain partners to prepare for about 20 million units a month. One of the handsets will be a version of the iPhone 5 (likely the iPhone 5S), and the other will be a lower-cost model that more closely resembles the iPhone 4S in terms of hardware, although its display and processor will be less impressive. The handsets... Read more...
The best way to save on your cell data usage is to switch your smartphone over to WiFi whenever you’re around a hotspot--unless you have a new iPhone 5 and are a Verizon Wireless customer, in which case a glitch apparently caused some phones to burn through the customer’s data allowance when it was supposed to be connected to a WiFi network. We’d rather not imagine how much money that has cost some people in overage fees. The good news is that Apple released an update--Carrier Settings Update 13.1--that should resolve the issue. Under the About tab under Settings-->General... Read more...
If you haven't been by our iPhone 5 review yet, you really should swing on over.  Apple's new smartphone is remarkable in some respects, ho-hum in others but decidedly gorgeous to behold.  Make no mistake, Android zealots, we're fans of HOT hardware here, (as if the masthead didn't clue you in) so we don't discriminate.  When a new device earns high marks in design elegance, we sit up and take note.  And there's little question, when you actually take time to pick up and handle the hardware, the iPhone 5 is pretty hot.  Beyond design elegance, you also can't argue the cold,... The iPhone 5 is available, but only for those who pre-ordered right away on September 14th and were willing to stand in line at an Apple Store or pay big bucks on an auction site. Many pundits will say that the new iPhone is perhaps a little bland. The device is just now hitting specs that Android phone makers hit a year ago. There's no NFC and no wireless charging.  There are no cutting-edge bells and whistles that aren't widely available elsewhere. However, the iPhone has never truly been about matching specs with other smartphones; it has always been about an elegant UI and experience that... Read more...
The iPhone 5 is available, but only for those who pre-ordered right away on September 14th and were willing to stand in line at an Apple Store or pay big bucks on an auction site. For the second year in a row, Apple decided to unveil a new iPhone in the run-up to the fourth quarter, instead of in June at WWDC. Last Q4, Apple saw record revenues as the iPhone 4S hit store shelves. It seems as if the company is hoping to strike gold two years in a row as we head into the all-important holiday buying season. Strangely, Apple's calling this latest model the iPhone 5, while the most recently released iPad... Read more...
Not interested in standing in long lines? Still trying to make up your mind on the iPhone 5? If so, here's a bit of information that may sway you when it comes to selecting a carrier. As fate would have it, or something like that, Verizon Wireless' iPhone 5 has a secret: it's unlocked from the factory. That means that even those who buy one with a new or renewed two-year contract will get an iPhone 5 that's unlocked. And because of the LTE radio, there's space for a SIM card -- well, a nano-SIM card. Sprint and AT&T only sell locked iPhone 5 units, which means those cannot be used on other... Read more...
Apple's iOS 6 is now available to download, and Apple has been quick to tout some "200 new features" over iOS 5. But of those 200, only a select few are noticeable to the end user. While a ton of stuff has been tweaked under the hood to enhance or otherwise modify the OS, not all of it is apparent to the end user. There are a few features, however, that are immediately apparent; here are our favorite new features that you'd be wise to check out... Apple iOS 6: Maps Mayhem and What’s New... Read more...

It's official: if you missed the initial pre-order wave for iPhone 5 shipments, you missed the boat. In just 12 hours after going on sale at 3:01am ET on the 14th, pre-orders everywhere are sold out. If you pre-order one today, you're looking at a 2-5 week wait at the minimum. Apple has been quoted as saying that they're "blown away" with the response, but they said the same thing for the iPhone 4S. And really, did anyone not expect the iPhone 5 to be a hot commodity? So, if you aren't up for waiting a solid month to get one, and you aren't about to pay $2000 on eBay, what are you other options?... Read more...
After churning through rumor after rumor after rumor for months, we finally have all the official details on the new iPhone 5, which Apple announced today at a press event. First of all, it is indeed called the iPhone 5, and it’s definitely an upgrade over last year’s iPhone 4S. Predictably, the body is thinner (just 7.6mm), lighter (112 grams), and slightly taller (enough to add another row of icons), and it’s made entirely of glass and aluminum--black with a black back or white with an aluminum-finish back, your choice. The display is indeed larger at 4 inches, and it boasts... Read more...
Turnabout is fair play, as they say; after suffering a terrible blow in court in its patent war against Apple, Samsung is fighting back. According to a report from the Korea Times, industry sources indicate that Samsung is planning to sue Apple over 4G LTE patents in its upcoming iPhone 5. Although this news is a bit surprising because A) the iPhone 5 isn’t technically official yet (stay tuned for the big announcement on September 12th) and B) we therefore don’t know for certain that the new iPhone will indeed have 4G LTE technology on board, let’s just assume that both assumptions... Well, it’s official: Apple has scheduled an event for September 12th in San Francisco, and if the logo for the event is any indication, the iPhone 5 will be the featured attraction. The logo shows a black 12 with a shadow in the shape of a 5. This confirms the rampant rumors that September 12th would be an Apple announcement day, that the newest iteration of the iPhone is coming, and that it’s most likely to be named the iPhone 5. Of course, there are other bits of speculation floating around, including that the new phone will include redesigned earbuds, a new A6 processor, a slightly... Read more...
