No one can ever debate the significance of the iPhone. It has changed society, it has changed the smartphone landscape, and it has changed the expectations of people when dealing with technology in general. Regardless of whether you personally dig the iPhone or not, there's little doubt that it's a game changer. But did you know that the iPad, which has sold 2 million units but still can't claim to have changed the world quite yet, had more to do with the iPhone than vice-versa? It's a pretty crazy thought, but according to Apple's own CEO, it's a true story. The iPad idea actually came first,... Read more...
When Steve Jobs introduced the iPad at a frenzied event in California this past January, he said something interesting. It's something that got many in the tech industry thinking, and now that we have played with the company's first tablet for a couple of weeks, we think it's time to really take a look at how reasonable Jobs' statement was. If you missed it, Jobs stated that he saw the Apple iPad as a type of third device; something that could fit in between your smartphone and your full-sized notebook... Wow, what a week it has been for Apple. Last Saturday, the company's first tablet launched and sold over 300,000 units on the first day. On Monday, they announced that iPhone OS 4.0 would be explained in detail later in the week. And now, those details are live, and they're substantial to say the least. Apple's CEO Steve Jobs took the stage in California in order to lay out the next generation of the company's iPhone operating system, going on and on about seven "tentpoles" that would boost up a seriously overhauled system. The keynote began with Jobs boasting about the iPad's success; as of today,... Read more...
We've had the opportunity to review a few tablet / netbook combinations here at HotHardware (the Eee PC T91 from Asus immediately comes to mind), but in the 10+ years of covering computing technology, there has yet to be a tablet as polarizing, alluring, and promising as iPad. And after all of these years, who would've thought that it would be Apple leading the tablet charge of 2010? Early last decade, somewhere around 2003 or 2004, there was a huge push for tablet PCs to make it big. That's a long time ago, for sure, but we recall it feeling a little bit like the netbook push of 2008. Companies... Read more...

Word on the Web is that the next iPhone OS update -- version 4.0 -- will finally deliver multitasking support via an Expose-like interface. That means users will be able to launch multiple apps, including third party ones, in the background and switch between them, a feature Android and Windows Mobile users take for granted."Those familiar with the design of iPhone 4.0 said that the user interface will resemble Apple's desktop Expose feature, in that a key combination -- reportedly hitting the Home button twice -- will trigger an expose-like interface that brings up a series of icons representing... One of the biggest complaints surrounding Apple's iPhone OS is the lack of multitasking support, and it's a valid one. But if the latest rumor proves to be true, critics will soon be silenced, or at least redirect their disgust squarely on the lack of Flash integration.Citing "people with a proven track record in predicting Apple's technological advances," AppleInsider.com says the Cupertino-based company will introduce a multitasking solution through the handset's 4.0 software update, at long last allowing third party apps to run in the background. If this comes to pass -- and we're inclined to... Today, Apple officially announced iPhone OS 3.1 which includes Genius recommendations for the App Store. The update also provides a ringtone store with over 30,000 ringtones which are available for $1.29 each. For users who find it tedious to search for and find new applications in Apple’s App Store, the Genius media-recommendation algorithm should come in handy. The algorithm looks at the apps you already own and then makes recommendations based on that information. The iPhone OS 3.1 update also includes a number of iTunes 9 related features such as support for Genius Mixes, the ability to generate... Read more...
