The television may not be what it once was for a mainstay like Toshiba, but the company's still investing in other growth areas. Just this week, it announced plans to plow 200 billion yen (around $1.9 billion) into its chip business beyond the current year. The outfit's CEO, Hisao Tanaka, confessed as much during an opening ceremony surrounding its chip fabrication plant in Yokkaichi, Japan. In case the financial sum wasn't a clue, Tanaka said that "boosting sales and profits" in the company's semiconductor unit was being made an even greater priority than becoming the world's leader in NAND flash... By and large, Apple doesn't really "do" partnerships. The company likes to play pretty much all of its cards close, hence the vertical integration between software and hardware. So, it came as something of a surprise when Apple not only allowed access to Twitter on iOS 5, but integrated it so tightly into the mobile OS. Users can tap into Twitter as if it's a first-party service, which is hugely rare and unique in the Apple universe. Apple even tried its hand at a social network once with Ping, but that clearly went nowhere. Now, with iOS 6, Apple is enabling the same level of tight integration... Read more...
We understand that a lot has happened since 2009, but if you remember the QUE e-reader that never actually shipped, this is the company that just received $700 million. Let's back up a bit, first. Plastic Logic was an up and coming company with loads of promise, and the QUE e-reader was particularly impressive. It looked unlike anything else out there at the time, and the UI was just stunning. If any new reader had a real chance to topple the Kindle and Nook, this was it. Eventually, the QUE was canceled, and Plastic Logic fell on hard times when it came to financing. But it's pretty obvious that... Read more...
Few things scream "recovery" for an economy like huge investments from public companies that don't exactly have to open up their checkbook in order to make ends meet, so it's great to see Intel proudly announcing three new Intel Capital investments totaling around $15 million. This amount pales in comparison to the $7 billion that Intel pledged to new chip plants last year, but these are certainly interesting in their own right. Intel has recently shown their ability to deviate from the semiconductor path, putting support behind the rollout of WiMAX as an example. Now, the company has seen three... Read more...
It's like a boy taking the training wheels off for the first time. Or a young lady going on her first date. Or a senior heading off to college. So far as we can tell, this is Twitter's coming of age party. Yep -- after receiving a very generous $250 million valuation late last month, the microblogging phenomenon has locked down even more capital. In a recent post to the Twitter, Inc. blog, the company proclaimed that it had increased active users by 900 percent in just a year, and while its web traffic is astounding, it's seeing double that to APIs. Needless to say, it's staff of 29 has been exceptionally... Read more...
We've always heard that the best way out of recession is to innovate through it, and it looks like Intel has heard that very same message. Amidst economic turmoil that led to sharply decreased sales (down 23 percent) and net income (down 90 percent) during Q4 2008, Intel is determined to continue its tradition of innovation in order to be on the bleeding edge once things get turned around.Announced this week, the chip maker has decided to invest some $7 billion over the next two years on chip plants (also known as a "fabs"), and it's also hoping to benefit from increased federal spending in the... As with all rumors, take the following story with a grain of salt until we receive official confirmation or denial from AMD.Rumor has it that AMD might receive some sort of financial bailout from the Middle East.  At this time there is no word on who is allegedly offering to help out, or what kind of stake in the company they'll be given.“This move, if and when it happens, will relieve AMD of a pile of debts it owes, and give it the space, time and money to open a new fab in Malta, New York State, because the company have plans to go for that, big time.”...    Intel moved in on a quiet little investment of a UK-based company against the backdrop of IDF the other day. And if you weren't maniacally focused on some of these things, as we are around here at HH, it would have sneaked past you, right under your nose, without so much as a twitch of your sensory circuits.  However, a press release that came across the wire this week was very telling indeed...
