Effective in about two months from now, Google will stop supporting Microsoft's Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) browser. Not for search, mind you, but online apps and services will no longer work on IE8 once Google flips the switch on November 15, 2012. "Internet Explorer 10 launches on 10/26/2012, and as a result, we will discontinue support for Internet Explorer 8 shortly afterwards, on 11/15/2012. After this date users accessing Google Apps services using Internet Explorer 8 will see a message recommending that they upgrade their browser," Google stated in a blog post. Internet Explorer 8 is the safest web browser on the market, according to a pair of studies sponsored by, um, Microsoft.One study focused on socially engineered malware and the other on phishing.In the first study, NSS Labs found that IE8 caught 81 percent of live threats, while Firefox 3 caught 27 percent, Safari 4 caught 21 percent, Chrome 2 caught 7 percent and Opera 10 Beta caught 1 percent. Maybe it's just me, but the unexpected words "ready for download now" referring to a Microsoft product seem... unusual. Microsoft was outlining the features and interoperability of its next generation web browser at the MIX show in Las Vegas yesterday, and shocked a lot of developers by announcing it was ready to download right away as Beta release.
