Following Google’s initial foray into the connected home front with the acquisition of Nest is an acquisition of Dropcam, a startup that makes a cloud-based WiFi video monitoring service. Rumors had emerged a few weeks ago that this was happening, but now the deal is going through for $555 million. According to the Wall Street Journal, Nest co-founder Matt Rogers confirmed that the company is paying cash for Dropcam. The deal will close pending regulatory approval. Verizon is about to test a smart-home automation system that uses its FiOS network in some New Jersey homes. The management system is simply known as Home Monitoring and Control. As you might expect, the system provides real-time access to home controls such as lighting, security cameras, locks, and thermostats. Using the system, you can also control appliances and various consumer electronics devices that are connected to the home network. Verizon plans to demo the smart-home system at CES in January. This new app gives you access to audio and video controls as well as the home automation system. The BeoLink application sends commands via Wi-Fi. The interface is customizable to show the scenes and commands requested by the customer. The app is free and currently available in the App store.
