The market for ultra-wide monitors is exploding, and all of the usual players are rushing to bring great-looking products to the market for consumers. ASUS is expanding its ultra-wide portfolio with the introduction of the Designo Curve MX34VQ, which aims to stand out from the crowd with a 34-inch, 3440x1440 display. As its name implies, the MX34VQ features a gentle curve (1800R to be exact), which should give customers a more immersive experience when viewing content. It also helps that the curved design just looks so damn cool as well. The VA panel has viewing angles of 178 degrees (horizontal... Read more...
If sharing is caring, then Amazon cares an awful lot about Lenovo, the Chinese electronics manufacturer that is building a version of Echo...with Amazon's blessing. Lenovo is calling its Echo clone Smart Assistant and like Echo it is powered by Amazon's Alexa digital assistant. That means users will be able to do all the same things they already can with Echo, but with a competing smart speaker that adds a bit of style to the Echo's cylindrical design. Obviously Lenovo and Amazon came to some kind of licensing agreement here, one that Amazon feels is worth the risk of cannibalizing sales of its... Read more...
First there was Amazon Echo, then came along Google Home. Now it looks as though Microsoft is looking to get in on the digital AI assistant/speaker movement with the help of Harman Kardon — a brand that is about to be tucked under Samsung’s wing with the acquisition of Harman. Although the device doesn’t have an official name at this point, it would be the first third-party device to integrate Cortana AI with speaker hardware. Although we can’t see the full product, it looks similar in design to the Amazon Echo with a towering cylindrical shape. Where it differs, however, is with what appears to... Read more...
Luxury audio has always demanded a hefty price premium, and Harman Kardon has consistently been a major audio player in the upper-end of the conventional mid-range. For the average consumer H/K equipment is rather expensive, but there's obviously far more expensive gear out there if you go searching. At any rate, the company's new MAS 102 mini stereo system is easily one of the pricier options we've seen, but it's also extremely classy and highly styled. Those familiar with the brand will probably recognize the motif right away. It's a tapletop system with two stereo speakers a 2x65-watt amplifier,... Read more...
Is the surround sound system dead? Not quite, but it's not nearly as necessary as it was just five years ago. At that point, running miles of speaker cable around your den was a dreadful requirement to get legitimate surround sound, but audio technologies have evolved quite substantially in the span of just a few years. Sound bars in particular offer a great balance; there's the compromise of not actually having 5, 6 or 7 independent speakers, but the size and ease of installation usually makes up for that. Harman Industries are today introducing the new Harman Kardon SB 16 2.1-channel soundbar... Read more...
We've said it before and we'll say it again -- the netbook market isn't going anywhere, tablet PCs be damned. In fact, the netbook sector grew by two models today, courtesy of Toshiba, which just released the Mini NB500 and NB520. The more exciting of the bunch is the NB520, which features "the world's smallest Harman/Kardon speakers on a laptop embedded in a slim an stylish casing," according to Toshiba. It's pretty rare for us to get excited over notebook audio, particularly in netbooks, so any time a company hits up a company like Harman/Kardon to handle audio chores, we're all for it. Other... What's this? Some arms race to produce the wildest, most alien-approved set of speakers ever? In the same month that JBL issued the third generation of its completely wild Creature speakers, yet another trusted name in sound has stepped forward with a pair of PC speakers that could very well blast off at any moment. Harman Kardon's GLA-55 speakers "merge the latest in art and science," and while the two-piece setup won't deliver pounding bass, it'll certainly provide the basics while upping your style points. The speakers are housed in clear enclosures and designed to work with PCs, MP3 players... The world hardly needs another Blu-ray player that only a few in a hundred can afford, but that's exactly what we're getting with Harman Kardon's latest. Granted, this one's aimed directly at the high-end market, so we'll certainly cut it some slack there. The BDP-10 is a Blu-ray / DVD player that can also play back multimedia via USB, and the built-in BD-Live feature ensures that users will be able to take advantage of the latest interactive features on films. As expected, the deck -- which is H/K's first Blu-ray unit -- boasts an HDMI output, support for LPCM/MP3/Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HA Master Audio...
