A couple of weeks back at GDC, in a bit of a surprise move considering NVIDIA’s CEO Jen Hsun Huang just left the stage at the company’s own GPU Technology Conference (GTC), the GeForce GTX Titan X was unveiled. The unveiling, which took place during one of EPIC’s talks, was somewhat casual and only a couple of details were disclosed. Jen Hsun said that GeForce GTX Titan X cards featured 12GB of memory and a GPU that packed in roughly 8 billion transistors. If you spent any time on the site or digging for news from GDC last week, you probably heard that NVIDIA’s CEO Jen Hsun Huang crashed one of EPIC’s talks at the show to unveil the company’s next flagship graphics card, the GeForce GTX Titan X. During one of EPIC’s “State Of Unreal Engine” briefing session out at the Game Developer’s Conference, Tim Sweeny talked about the need for more powerful GPU technology to bring us closer to true photo-realistic rendering. When we evaluated NVIDIA’s Maxwell-based GeForce GTX 750 and 750 Ti a few weeks back, we lauded the GPUs for their competitive performance and class-leading power efficiency. The GeForce GTX 750 and 750 Ti are mainstream products that didn’t tear up the benchmark charts like a bleeding-edge high-end GPU would, but their Maxwell-based GPUs competed well with similarly priced products and they did so at much lower power levels. While out at AMD’s tech days in Hawaii, a number of folks were chit-chatting about recent developments and some of our peers felt compelled to mention how “terrified” NVIDIA was of AMD Hawaii GPU, that AMD caught NVIDIA off guard, and that they wouldn’t have any real answer until well into 2014. Today’s launch of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti is somewhat satisfying to us on a couple of levels. First off, there are few things as exciting as a new, high-end GPU launch. NVIDIA is launching yet another new member of the GeForce GTX 700 series today, the freshly minted GeForce GTX 760. Like the GeForce GTX 770 which arrived just a few weeks ago, the new GeForce GTX 760 is built around the company’s GK104 GPU—the very same chip used last year’s GeForce GTX 680 and a few other GTX 600 series cards. The GeForce GTX 760, however, targets a different market segment and is debuting at a much more palatable price point than its predecessors. With its GK110 GPU and massive 6GB frame buffer, the GeForce GTX Titan was easily able to outrun the GK104-based GeForce GTX 680 and it hung with the dual-GPU powered GeForce GTX 690 as well. That gap between the GeForce GTX 680 and GTX Titan could have potentially been filled by a scaled down GK110 with a smaller frame buffer, and in fact, one of the first questions we asked of NVIDIA during our briefing on Titan was if a more affordable version of the card was in the... While we were able to reveal the card itself, discuss its new features and specifications, and talk about some of the new systems it will be powering, we weren’t able to post any performance data. Fortunately, that all changes today. We’ve been able to test NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX Titan in a number of different configurations, including SLI and in a multi-monitor setup, and have the goods for you here today. NVIDIA is launching a new, ultra high-end graphics card today, the long rumored GeForce GTX Titan. Although the card itself and a couple of its features are new to the consumer graphics card market, many details of the GPU powering the GTX Titan, namely the NVIDIA GK110, have been previously covered here. In fact, NVIDIA revealed the GK110 at GTC 2012 in May of last year and released its first Tesla-branded products based on the GPU a few months later. The GK110 is also a key component of the GeForce GTX Titan’s namesake, the Titan Supercomputer, which uses almost 19,000 of the GPUs in tandem... Read more...
