Smartphones take a lot of abuse, and there’s money to be made in screens that are resistant to scratches and cracks. Corning’s Gorilla Glass has been the leader in this market, appearing on Apple iPhones and Samsung Galaxy smartphones, but it has had some competition from beleaguered GT Advanced Technologies, which made remarkably scratch-resistant synthetic sapphire for iPhone camera covers and other devices. Now, Corning says it has a material that is almost as scratch resistant as GTAT sapphire and much more resistant to being dropped. Image credit: Corning Corning’s new material is codenamed... It appears that the photocopiers are running at full steam in the tech world. In mid-November, Nokia showed no mercy with its Android-based N1 tablet that looks like a near clone of Apple’s iPad mini. Today, Hewlett-Packard is jumping onboard with its new Pro Slate tablets, which look supersized versions of the HTC One (M8) smartphone. There are two models in the new tablet family: the 12.3-inch Pro Slate 12 and the 7.9-inch Pro Slate 8. Specs wise, neither tablet is likely to set your hair on fire thanks to the 2013-era Snapdragon 800 processor with 2GB of RAM. And while similar tablets like the... Read more...
Since when is an external hard drive solution a decorative desk piece? Since now, apparently -- Seagate's premium owned LaCie division today unveiled the LaCie Mirror portable hard drive that comes completely encased in scratch resistant Corning Gorilla Glass. It also comes with an ebony wooden base, which might seem odd for an external drive, though this is one of those cases where it would be a shame to keep it out of sight. The LaCie Mirror is a signature piece designed in collaboration with French designer Pauline Deltour. It's also functional -- inside the Mirror sits a 1TB hard drive for... Read more...
Earlier this week, Apple's partner for sapphire display technology, GT Advanced Technologies, filed for bankruptcy claiming that it could not continue operating in its present state. Today, some of the documents originally filed were unsealed and we got a closer look -- including GT Advanced Technologies plan to shutter the plant in Arizona it was supposedly about to bring online. In early August, CEO Tom Gutierrez told investors that the company was on track to hit technical milestones and necessary targets to bring sapphire to the mass market and receive a further $139M payment from apple. Today,... Read more...
Gorilla Glass. Heard of it? Sure you have. It's on loads of smartphones these days, and it's widely regarded as one of the most significant mobile technologies in the past few years. Willow Glass is the company's next great product, an ultra-slim flexible glass designed for the next generation of consumer electronics. The thinness, strength, and flexibility of the glass has the potential to enable displays to be "wrapped" around a device or structure. As well, Corning Willow Glass can be processed at temperatures up to 500° C. High temperature processing capability is essential for today's... Read more...
Corning has sent the first shipments of its new Gorilla Glass 2 to "key device makers" who will use the new glass in devices planned for release this year. As the next-generation version of the widely used cover glass for smartphones and other consumer electronic devices, Gorilla Glass 2 improves upon the original version by offering the same performance and strength in a thinner form. In fact, Gorilla Glass 2 is up to 20 percent thinner than the original. Corning expects the first devices that are equipped with Gorilla Glass 2 to be available in April or May. Gorilla Glass is currently used by... Read more...
Never heard of Gorilla Glass? That's a shame, and if we had our druthers, we'd like to see it on every notebook out there. Of course, it's pretty darn expensive, so maybe we'd only like to see it when prices sink down a bit. At any rate, Motion Computing has decided to offer the extremely durable screen on its C5 and F5 tablets, both of which are designed for field use and are apt to come into contact with some pretty rough environments. The C5 and F5 are both within the outfit's "rugged tablet" lineup, and now they can be ordered with Corning glass in order to keep your screen free from breaks...
