AMD this afternoon kicked off is first Financial Analyst Day in three years. During the hiatus, AMD has had a change of leadership (former CEO Rory Reed parted ways and was replaced by Dr. Lisa Su) and the company has seen its market share erode in the processor and GPU markets — the downturn in the PC market has been especially tough for AMD. On the x86 side, AMD is pushing forward with the 2016 launch of processors based on its new Zen core. We briefly touched on Zen last week when slides leaked to the Internet, but AMD’s Mark Papermaster was on hand to give us some more juicy details on what... Read more...

It has been more than a year since AMD launched its last major update to the top end FX processor line -- the FX-9590. The company has been quiet in the face of Intel's high-end launches, but today AMD is shipping a new CPU that's aimed at multi-core performance enthusiasts who don't want a furnace sitting on their motherboards, and prefer more modest power consumption and quiet computing. The new FX-8370, FX-8370E, and FX-8320E are familiar in many ways. These cores are still based on the older Piledriver architecture that debuted in 2012, they can still process two threads per module and four... Read more...

AMD announced a pair of new FX-series processors, the AMD FX-4350 and AMD FX-6350, which will serve to add a couple of new SKUs to the Piledriver/Vishera mix. Previously, AMD’s latest crop of high-end desktop chips consisted of the 8-core FX-8350 and FX-8320, the 6-core FX-6300, and the 4-core FX-4300. The FX-4350 (four cores, 4.3GHz Max Turbo) purports to offer a 10% performance increase over the previous generation and features 12MB of L2 and L3 cache and a 125W thermal envelope. The FX-6350 (six cores, 4.2GHz Max Turbo) has 14MB of L2 and L3 cache. Both are unlocked to give overclockers... Read more...
Ever since Bulldozer's less-than-spectacular debut, enthusiasts and investors have watched to see if the company would follow up with faster chips that improved overall performance. That's finally started to happen; AMD announced two new chips today -- the quad-core FX-4170 with a 4.2GHz base clock speed / 4.3GHz Turbo mode, and the six-core FX-6200 at 3.8GHz stock / 4.1GHz Turbo. Both of the new parts are clocked ~15% faster than the FX-4100 and FX-6100 and may offer a slightly faster integrated memory controller as well; rumors indicate that the IMC is clocked at 2.2GHz, up from 2GHz. The new... Read more...
Today AMD is officially taking the wraps off its latest FX-Series of desktop processors, targeted at performance-minded PC enthusiasts and overclockers. The FX-Series is based on the processor core formerly codenamed Zambezi, which leverages AMD’s much anticipated Bulldozer microarchitecture. The flagship processor in the new FX-Series line-up is the FX-8150, an unlocked, 8-Core processor, with gobs of cache and peak Turbo frequencies that exceed the 4GHz mark. But there’s a lot more to the FX-Series than speeds and feeds. The Bulldozer microarchitecture is a completely new design,... Read more...
When we sit down to arrange our thoughts and write an introduction for a new product launch, we typically want to put together some interesting and suspenseful prose that sets the stage for an exciting reveal of an as-yet undisclosed, eagerly anticipated product. No such luck this time around, as the product we’ll be discussing today has been one of the most talked about in tech circles for years—literally. Today AMD is officially taking the wraps off its latest FX-Series of desktop processors, targeted at performance-minded PC enthusiasts and overclockers. The FX-Series is based... Read more...
Adam Kozak, product marketing manager at AMD, has just published a blog post on the AMD website titled, “Get Your Rig Ready for the AMD FX Processor”. As you can probably surmise from the title, Adam outlines the steps necessary for do-it-yourselfers to get their machines ready to work with upcoming AMD FX 8-Core processors, a.k.a Zambezi, which are based on the Bulldozer architecture. In the post, Adam talks about getting the right motherboard, i.e. a socket AM3+ motherboard based on the 9-Series chipset (a handful of which we reviewed right here), flashing it with a Bulldozer... While out at an event in AMD’s Austin offices a couple of weeks back, we got a chance to get up close and personal with the company’s upcoming Bulldozer-based FX-line of processors. Many of the details disclosed at the event are still under embargo, but AMD is allowing a bit of a sneak peek with today’s Guinness World Record announcement. One of the demos at AMD’s HQ consisted of an array of overclocked FX processors, using various cooling methods, including air, water, and phase-change hardware. But the real star of the event was a liquid-nitrogen / liquid-helium... Read more...
Multiple bits of CPU data have crept out from under the woodwork in the last few days; here's a roundup of what's making the rounds. On the AMD side of the equation comes a rumor that the company is about to stop producing Phenom II X2 and X4 processors in favor of moving consumers along to the Fusion-based A8 hardware. Currently, the two APU's in stock at NewEgg--the A8-3650 (2.6GHz, $119) and the A8-3850 (2.9GHz, $139) offer significantly slower CPU cores than the Phenom II X4 955 BE (3.2GHz, $119) and Phenom II X4 965 BE (3.4GHz, $134) they'd replace. TechEye, which relayed the rumor from Kitguru,... Read more...
With Bobcat and Llano launched, AMD has one more major product overhaul set for this year. The company's Bulldozer CPU will launch in the next few months, and after years of waiting, enthusiasts and IT industry analysts are both curious to see what AMD has in its high performance pipeline. A Turkish website, Donanim Haber, recently got its hands on what they claim is a Bulldozer FX processor--but while we're going to talk about the site's findings, we'd recommend readers take them with some caution. The new octal-core processor is an AMD FX-8130P running at 3.2GHz base speed, what's reported as... Read more...
