Epic Games has selected 10 individuals in the education sector to receive $75,000 each in Unreal Dev Grants. It's the first round of funding to academic and educational recipients, with the grants intended for developers working on "promising early-stage projects." Those who receive funding can use the money however they wish -- there are no strings attached, Epic Games says. "The talented educators and developers recognized today are receiving the first Unreal Dev Grants for education thanks to their tireless contributions to the UE4 community," said Luis Cataldi, education evangelist at Epic... Four members belonging to an international computer hacking ring have been indicted. The Justice Department released a press release that revealed the members were charged with breaking into the computer networks of tech companies and even the U.S. Army. The estimated value of the theft of intellectual property is said to be over $100 million. “As the indictment charges, the members of this international hacking ring stole trade secret data used in high-tech American products, ranging from software that trains U.S. soldiers to fly Apache helicopters to Xbox games that entertain millions around... It's a great time to be an aspiring game developer. There are some big time resources available, such as access to Unreal Engine on a subscription basis for $19 per month, which was just recently announced at the 2014 Game Developers Conference (GDC). In other words, just about all of the major platforms are covered. For you console fans, if you're... Read more...
When Epic Games demoed the Unreal 4 engine earlier next year, Crytek barely batted an eyelash. The company's new trailer for the upcoming Crysis 3 is evidence of why. The game environments are stunning, and the company swears the footage its showing is drawn from real-world gameplay. The game engine is flexible; it looks as though the PC version will stand out quite a bit from the Xbox and PS3 flavors. When Crytek released the original Crysis, it inadvertently shot itself in the foot. So much attention had been focused on the game's lavish visuals and detail levels (and the horsepower required... If you're looking for an app to show off your iPad, your search is over. At yesterday's Apple event, Epic Games announced a new game for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch called Project Sword, an action RGP being made exclusively for iOS. Minutes later, Epic Games went and released a tech demo as a free app available via iTunes that lets you explore the castle environment in awesome detail. It's called Epic Citadel, and it's an 82.2MB download powered by Epic's Unreal Engine 3 technology. We gave the tech demo a spin and, well, let's just say we're officially excited about the future of gaming on... Read more...
A digital certificate that expired on 1/28 effectively kills the game Gears of War, as users who try to run it receive a "'You cannot run this game with modified executable code, please reinstall" error. The issue has been traced to the aforementioned expired digital certificate (shown). Obviously since the game was released in Nov. of 2007 for the PC, no one at Epic Games or Microsoft could possibly imagine that anyone would still be playing it 15 months later, right? It's hard to decided whether to call this hilarious, sad, stupid, or just plain silly. An Epic Games Super Moderator posted the... Read more...
