An anonymous bidder laid out a cool $91K and change in an online auction to put an extra-special Iron Man Limited Edition Galaxy S6 Edge in their pocket, agreeing to pay 100 times the retail price for the device due to its 66 serial number (in China six is considered a lucky number, and thus 66 is doubly so). Yes, you read that right, and no, it is not the 1st of April, not in the U.S., China, or anywhere else today on our spinning blue rock.  The JD.com auction for the devilishly cool Iron Man Limited Edition Galaxy S666 Edge comes just two weeks after another one of the Edge-y... Later this year, auction site eBay and its wholly owned online payment subsidiary PayPal will split into two different companies, and as they prepare to do that, several employees are being handed pink slips. The two divisions have reportedly begun notifying affected employees, most of which have been participating in projects that didn't turn out the way eBay hoped.According to Recode and the "multiple sources" it spoke with, some of the PayPal employees who lost their jobs were in sales or held product roles in the division that was in charge of getting restaurants and small retail stores to... There’s something about limited editions that triggers the win-at-any-cost instinct in some people. Sony recently put just more than 12,000 20th Anniversary Edition PlayStation 4s up for sale, prompting a mad rush to the PlayStation site by would-be customers. That was immediately followed by mind-boggling bids on eBay as early buyers auctioned off their newly-purchased consoles. Bidding on the few available consoles has been fierce, but hit the roof in one auction, which is sitting at $15,100 after 32 bids.Image Credit: SonyWhether the buyer really ponies up $15k for the anniversary PS4 remains... It appears that one man’s trash is, indeed, another man’s treasure as bids for old, dirty, and crumpled up Atari 2600 games on Ebay have exceeded $500. Thousands of Atari games were buried in Alamogordo, New Mexico and, after being buried for 30 years, were dug up and are now being sold on Ebay that includes copies of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Defender, Asteroids, and other classic games. The games are being sold through the Tularosa Basin Historical society on Ebay. Right now, only 100 cartridges are being auctioned off on Ebay to get a sense of how much they’ll go for with... There seems to be a trend that is growing among major tech companies with breaking up into smaller pieces. Ebay and Hewlett-Packard announced that they were breaking up into smaller pieces. Now it seems Symantec Corp could be adapting that trend in the future, according to unnamed sources that spoke to Bloomberg who are knowledgeable about the matter. It seems that the software company is looking to split up its business into two separate companies. One side would focus on selling its Norton security programs while the other deals with data storage. The sources said that the plan is in advanced... Read more...

Bitcoin is quickly overcoming its sketchy past, one that was linked with illicit drug markets and other illegal activities. It's still a highly volatile currency, but it's also one that more and more online and offline vendors are willing to gamble on. That includes online auction site eBay, which is reportedly in talks with various bitcoin payment processing companies, including Coinbase, to integrate bitcoin processing into its Braintree payments subsidiary, which is a part of PayPal. According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, no agreement has yet been reached. Should a deal eventually... Read more...
With only so much top level talent available in the technology industry, it's not uncommon for high ranking employees to change firms. Such is the case for David Marcus, president of eBay's PayPal division, who is joining Facebook to spearhead the company's efforts in mobile messaging. His primary responsibility will be running Messenger, a recently spun off chat application. Facebook views messaging as a core part of its social networking service and a key element in its mission to connect the world. Don't worry, it wasn't an arbitrary exercise -- eBay later today will be sending out emails and posting notices asking you to change your password due to a security breach. Some placeholder pages were spotted online by savvy web users that seemed to suggest a notice was forthcoming. The folks at The Wall Street Journal got in touch with eBay and found out that a cyberattack compromised a database containing encrypted passwords... Read more...
One of the reasons why brick-and-mortar stores still exist is because online shopping lacks the ability to offer instant gratification. As it pertains to clothes shopping, another major disadvantage is not being able to try on items to see if they'll fit properly. Advancements in technology will eventually solve these problems, and as far as trying on clothes go, eBay just acquired a company that creates 3D models of clothing from photos, pattern files, and other sources. The company is called PhiSix, and with the acquisition, eBay hopes to offer shoppers a virtual fitting room for a more immersive... Read more...
We maintain that people are inherently good, but you know what they say about a few bad apples. This being the holiday season, you have to wary of the world's miscreants looking to prey on your goodwill and generosity, such as that guy walking around the parking lot claiming he's out of gas and asking to 'borrow' $20 probably (Psst, he's not really out of gas). This holiday season also happens to coincide with two major console launches -- Microsoft's Xbox One and Sony's PlayStation 4 -- and as is always the case, a shortage of units has gamers shopping on eBay at inflated prices. If you're going... Read more...
