This morning at the Intel Developers Conference in San Francisco, Intel PC Client Group Vice President Kirk Skaugen offered a live demo of "Skylake," the follow-on to the company's Broadwell processor platform.  Set for launch before the end of 2015, the platform is claimed to offer significant battery life gains for 2-in-1 hybrids and tablets. Though they're built on the same 14nm process as Intel's Broadwell architecture, the design is reported to incorporate some significant advancements including, finally, the full realization of wireless charging and data streaming between devices in... There's a lot of talk these days surrounding 3D. It's obviously the hottest topic around in the cinema business, but it's also getting a lot of attention in the consumer universe. Sales of 3DTVs has analysts and companies alike buzzing, and while many suggest that the adoption has been relatively slow and lackluster, much of that is blamed on a lack of content. In other words, what enticement do consumers have to invest in a 3DTV when there's hardly any 3D content to enjoy? NHK, a broadcasting outfit based in Japan, may have a solution to the subpar 3D image quality coming across typical wires.... Read more...
Augmented reality has a long way to go before it's widely used in mainstream homes, but it's already progressing to a point where technology lovers are taking notice. The Nintendo 3DS makes great use of AR, and clearly Sony doesn't want to be left behind in the race. The company has recently revealed a new kind of AR, called SmartAR. In typical augmented reality situations, you need a card or inanimate object to then view something real. But in Sony's SmartAR demo, the company uses "markerless" object recognition to focus on real-life objects, making the interactions that much more genuine. There's... Read more...

Microsoft's research labs have been known to create some pretty wild projects. Granted, not all of them have hit the market or anything, but there's a good chance that something huge down the road will spring up. Project Natal is already proof that Redmond has quite a few out-of-the-box thinkers on staff, and while we can't say it with any real degree of certainty, we're guessing that this stuff is what techie dreams are made of.During the company's College Tour 2009, Microsoft showed off what it's describing as a "mindblowing natural user interface." In essence, this is really just a supercomputer... Read more...
Not too long ago, it was Intel demonstrating its newest, hippest family of 32nm Westmere processors; today, it's AMD's turn to strut its stuff. Advanced Micro Devices has just revealed to the public the first video and images demonstrating live migration across three generations of AMD processors on VMware ESX 3.5, including the six-core AMD Opteron processor, often referred to as "Istanbul." For those unaware of the strains in server environments, live migration of virtual machines across physical servers is crucial to providing flexibility for managing data centers. Not to mention the whole thing... Read more...

As always we want to start out by telling you that this is a rumor and thus we begin this news post with our normal warning that this is a rumor until we can confirm it, but what a rumor: a new generation of Samsung SSDs that are capable of 120 MB/sec reads and 100 MB/sec writes.SSD isn't without its pitfalls, namely high price and, until now, typically lower transfer rates than traditional mechanical drives.  It looks like we might be entering a brave new world:“These new drives come in 1.8 and 2.5-inch formats, and feature 960 Mbps sequential read and 800 Mbps sequential write speed respectively,...
