Sony has posted financial results for the first fiscal quarter 2012, and the company has been hurt by a decline in PS3 sales. Fiscal Q1 revenues from game hardware, software and online services dropped 11.9% from the previous year to $1.5 billion, while unit sales of the Playstation 3 dropped to 1.8 million compared to 2.4 million the year prior. The company expects the total number of PS3 units sold this year to be 15 million, which is actually an increase from 14.3 million last year. Dell reported a 46% profit increase in its latest results Thursday, topping estimates - but it also indicated that future cost declines would slow, which could indicate problems to come for the beleaguered company. Dell, like competitors Hewlett-Packard Co and Apple Inc, profited from lower costs for computer components amid a supply glut. HP, the top PC maker by market share, also suggested this month that component cost reductions may slow. Since the release of this quarter's financial earnings, there has been some criticism towards Dell for their stinging 51% decline in quarterly profits. On the other hand, Hewlett-Packard posted stronger than expected earnings, raising its earnings per share for the fourth quarter in a row. Apple Computer Inc. expects the average selling price of its iPod digital music players to decline in the current quarter from the prior period, the company's CFO said on Wednesday. "We expect them to be down a little bit in the June quarter," Apple's Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer said. He also told Reuters that the gross margins on iPods in the just-completed March quarter were "above 20 percent," consistent with his past comments about iPod gross margins.  ... Read more...
