The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas gets the year going in the right direction for everyone in the high tech industry. The Android mobile platform has certainly been getting its fair share of attention lately. In addition to the many Android smartphones that were demoed at CES, there were also other Android-based devices to be seen. Take Funai Electric Co's universal remote control, for instance. Based on Android, the I-Remote was first demoed at CES this year. This multifunctional multimedia device runs on Android 1.5. It features a 7-inch touch-sensitive screen. Although they're not quite ready for prime-time just yet, MSI gave us a glimpse at three new PCs the company is working on creating. The company believes the new systems could redefine the way customers interact with digital information within the home. The first concept PC is a 3D All-in-One PC. To use this PC, you must wear wireless 3D glasses which deliver "the ultimate life-like gaming experience and 3D HD movie experience from the comfort of home with system's stunning 24-inch display." 3D gaming has come to the Palm webOS platform. During CES, Palm introduced several graphics-intensive game titles for webOS. The titles come from leading game developers such as EA Mobile, Gameloft, Glu Mobile, and Laminar Research. Following in the footsteps of Google, Navigon, and Nextar, TomTom is promising free map updates for select GPS navigation systems starting in the second quarter of this year. Although details as to which models will be included in this offer are scant at this point, TomTom tells us that the updates will be available to users by simply connecting their navigation devices to TomTom HOME. Registered users will be notified of map updates as they become available. TomTom uses Tele Atlas maps, which are generally updated on a quarterly basis. We've heard about this one before, but now Spring Design has officially taken the wraps off of the Alex dual-screen e-reader. Based on the Android operating system, the Alex lets users search the Internet on the lower 3.5-inch color browser LCD screen while also displaying books, periodicals, and even personal documents on the paper-like 6-inch EPD screen. For connectivity, Alex uses Wi-Fi, 3G, EVDO/CDMA, and GSM. Alex will be available starting February 22 for $399. Toshiba expanded its NAND-flash-based SSD line-up by introducing a 128GB Half-Slim /mSATA SG Series SSD designed for use in mini-mobile and netbook PCs. Toshiba also introduced a third generation, high performance HG3 Series featuring higher performance read/write SSDs. The HG3 generation SSD is designed for use in notebook computers, gaming, and home entertainment systems. Things are definitely heating up for the Android platform this week. After Google announced the Nexus One, AT&T announced plans to launch five new Android devices in the first half of this year, including a smartphone from Dell. Other devices will come from Motorola and HTC.
