Today, Western Digital announced the world's highest density hard drive, as they reach the 3TB mark with their newest, 5th generation Caviar Green product. The Caviar Green 3TB serves up a super-sized combination of reduced power consumption, lower operating temperature, and a quieter operation.  Unfortunately, if you're still using Windows XP, don't expect your system to make full use of any 3TB drive (yet). The problem is that older operating systems, in combination with a legacy BIOS and master boot record (MBR) partition table scheme, face a barrier at 2.19TB.  Existing motherboards... Read more...
While solid state drives get faster, mechanical hard drives get larger. Not long ago, we celebrated the first 1TB hard drive, and since then, welcomed 1.5TB and eventually 2TB drives to the consumer market. Yes, the performance increase that SSD's offer is more than impressive. However, they still can't touch the capacity that traditional hard drives provide tech-savvy, budget conscious consumers and system builders. When it comes to cost per gigabyte analysis, hard drives possess a huge advantage over SSD's. Western Digital Caviar Green 3TB Hard Drive Today, Western Digital announces the world's... Read more...
It happens to all of us at some point. We constantly run short of hard drive space, no matter how incredibly cavernous you thought your current drive was when you bought it. Did you really expect Dragon Age: Origins and Borderlands to soak up almost thirty gigabytes between them? Didn't think so. You either shove Office 2007 and Photoshop CS aside to make some room for your latest losslessly-ripped music and RAW photos, or grab a drive that offers up more capacity, say up to 2TB--such as the ones we're going to be evaluating here. You know the contenders. These aren't solid state drives full of... Read more...

Late last week Western Digital briefed us on their forthcoming release of a new addition to their Caviar Green family of hard drives.  No we're not talking some sort of exotic sushi or cracker-bound fish egg here either but rather a new, rather humongous and environmentally more friendly hard drive from WD, that can be considered an "industry first".  Today marks the day that standard rotational media breaks the 2TB barrier.  Let's spell that out a bit more clearly again here; T-W-O full Terabytes of SATA-based storage on a single, standard 3.5" hard drive.  Those... Just in case you shot right down to the news section this morning and missed the link at the top of the page, we wanted to pop in and let you all know that we have just posted a new article here at HotHardware in which we evaluate the features, performance, and power consumption of Western Digital's Caviar and RE.2 GreenPower 1TB hard drives.  In addition to their large capacities, these drives offer a number of proprietary features designed to lower their power consumption and acoustic profiles, like IntelliPower, IntelliSeek, IntelliPark, and in the RE.2's case RAFF (Rotary Acceleration... We wish the current "green" trend would have happened a long time ago, and we actually hope that it results in a permanent mentality adjustment rather than fading like so many trends do. We are happy to see that companies are now expected to be somewhat environmentally-conscious. We love to see companies compete on metrics like performance per watt and we know we aren't the only ones who have an affinity for new architectures and designs that result in both efficiency improvements and performance gains. It wasn't so long ago that efficiency and performance were almost always inversely... Read more...
Just in case you missed the new link at the top of the page, we're writing this morning to let you all know that we've just posted  a new article here at HotHardware in which we evaluate the features and performance of Western Digital's Caviar RE2 750 GB hard drive.  Western Digital’s RE2 lineup is targeted at workstations and servers, which need lots of disk capacity along with top-notch RAID performance and long-life reliability.  At its core, the RE2 lineup is identical to the SE16 lineup for the performance desktop, but the RE2 has a slightly different feature set,... When it comes to 7,200 RPM desktop drives, there are few names in the industry that are quite as well respected as the Western Digital Caviar lineup. It’s a time-tested brand which has consistently held its own, in terms of raw performance, acoustics, and reliability. While the Caviar name once stood for a single lineup of drives, Western Digital has now branched out the Caviar name to different markets, slightly tweaking the feature sets to address different requirements. Beyond the standard Caviar drives, which are now targeted for the low-end market, we’ve got the Caviar... Read more...

Hey folks, it's pretty late but the news just doesn't stop :) It's not exactly computer hardware, but Nintendo has revealed their design for Revolution's controller. At first I was a little disappointed, but after thinking about how it could change the way games are played, I'm actually excited about it. There are only so many different genres you can invent, only so many different story lines you can write... really, there are only so many ideas. However, changing the way a game is played is something that hasn't really been attempted before, certainly not on this scale. It could be the next big... Read more...
Gigabyte 7800GT Review @ amdzone.com: "Since ATI got their act together with the Radeon 9700 it has been a very tough battle between Nvidia and ATI over who lays claim to the fastest video card for computer gaming, a constant tug of war that never seems to end. Earlier in the summer Nvidia fought back big with their G70 GPU and the 7800GTX, a card with unparalleled performance across the board. However, with it came a very hefty $500 price tag that most gamers simply cannot afford to pay. At QuakeCon a few weeks ago Nvidia had an answer to this with their 7800GT, the sweet spot of mid-range... Read more...
