Blizzard announced today that World of Warcraft has finally broken 12 million players worldwide. This recent growth, according to the company, was caused by the long-delayed August release of Wrath of the Lich King in mainland China. WoW players have been salivating over the question of when Blizzard's next expansion would launch, and the company has finally given its answer. Starting on December 7, gamers will be able to purchase and explore the new zones, races, and content the Cataclysm expansion will add to the existing MMO. Players who don't buy Cataclysm will still indirectly benefit from it—Blizzard has used the expansion as an excuse to revamp the entire world of Azeroth, including much of what was once considered 'classic' content. Blizzard has finally lifted on the veil on the upcoming World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, and the official information generally confirms and fleshes out the sneak preview from last week. The new expansion will feature the corrupted black dragon Deathwing as its principle villain. Once thought buried in the depths below the fortress of Grim Batol, Deathwing has actually spent years within the earthen Elemental Plane, Deepholm. The Cataclysm itself is caused by Deathwing's ascent and erruption into Azeroth; an event that will create what Blizzard describes as a "festering wound across the continents.... Read more...
When I wrote my review of Wrath of the Lich King last December, I praised the game for its innovations, new content, and the gorgeous environments of Northrend, but concluded with this:"If Blizzard wants to keep WoW from becoming stale, it needs to push the envelope. The company's financial resources are absolutely enormous, and while throwing money at a game doesn't improve its quality, there's no doubt that Blizzard could afford the cost of refreshing the original game's visuals, designing an optional, higher-end graphics package, or exploring new and different ways to expand World of Warcraft....
