This is a pretty sizable camcorder, but not nearly as large as some of the camcorders from year's past. And considering what kind of technology is within this unit, it's pretty microscopic. Panasonic's AG-AF100 is a Micro Four Thirds video camera. It's one of the few MFT devices that is tailored for video rather than still photography, and while it has taken some time to come to fruition, Panasonic's shipping lines are finally rolling on it. It's listed at $4,995, and offers a 4/3" sensor with a professional-grade enclosure. The full HD 1080/720 production camera is designed to handle pro jobs,... Read more...
Creating 3D maps and worlds can be extremely labor intensive and time consuming. And ultimately the final result might not survive the close scrutiny of those expecting real-world emulations. A new technique developed by scientists at The University of Manchester's School of Computer Science and Dolby Canada, however, might make capturing depth and textures for 3D surfaces as simple as shooting two pictures with a digital camera--one with flash and one without. Credit: NewScientist.com For a high-level description of the technique, here is the abstract from a presentation given about it during... Read more...
J.D. Power and Associates has just released the results of its 2008 Digital Camera Usage and Satisfaction Study, based on responses from over 8,000 digital camera purchasers between April 2007 and March 2008. Not only does the study identify which cameras consumers liked best, but it also gives an indication of what consumers are doing with their cameras and what kind of features they want. The report breaks out digital cameras into four sub-categories: digital single-lens reflex (DSLR), point and shoot, premium point and shoot, and ultra slim. Then each of those categories is evaluated with four... Read more...

The British company Thruvision has announced the T5000 Security Imaging System, a camera that can "see" under clothes using what the company calls "passive imaging technology" to identify objects by the natural electromagnetic rays that they emit. The T5000 camera, created by a company called ThruVision, uses what it calls "passive imaging technology" to identify objects by the natural electromagnetic rays--known as Terahertz or T-rays--that they emit. The high-powered camera can detect hidden objects from up to 80 feet away and is effective even when people are moving. It does not reveal physical... Read more...
Keith Fife and his colleagues at Stanford University have come up with they call a "multi-aperture image sensor," which allows digital pictures to collect and store depth-of-field information. Unlike other 3D camera setups, the data is gathered at the chip level, so no expensive and complicated multiple lens setups are required. Instead of devoting the entire sensor for one big representation of the image, Fife's 3-megapixel sensor prototype breaks the scene up into many small, slightly overlapping 16x16-pixel patches called subarrays. Each subarray has its own lens to view the world--thus the... Read more...
BenQ’s X725 and T700 digital cameras were introduced into the UK market today, barely making it before photo season really kicks off. The T700, 7-megapixel digital camera is BenQ's first touch screen digital camera and features a 3-inch LCD touch screen display, which BenQ prides as a testament to its tradition in quality LCD technology. Indeed, its 3-inch panel boasts a remarkable resolution of 232,000 pixels. At 14.9mm in width, the T700 is unlikely to be cumbersome. "What’s more, the T700 features a Pentax SMC (Super Multi-Coating) lens for high contrast images and with a high colour saturation.”... Read more...
Are advances in camera phone picture quality and data transfer going to make digital cameras redundant for most people soon? "With camera phones and their flashes becoming increasingly powerful the phone makers have realised they have to migrate functions such as red-eye reduction onto their phones," Zarakov told ENN. "The volumes are huge. Compare around 80 million or 90 million digital cameras sold in 2006 to 500 million camera phones." The firm, which specialises in communications technology for the digital camera industry, claims its new MTP-IP connectivity solution (Media Transfer Protocol-Internet... Read more...
We haven't posted any links to digital camera reviews for some time, but according to Bytesector, Nikon's Coolpix L3 5MP deserves some attention. The suggested MSRP for the camera is around $270, which makes it a great buy for someone who's looking for a decent camera that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. "Nikon's L series got a big push this year with three new models and offers the Coolpix L3 as the only new 5 megapixel camera for 2006. The L3 provides some of Nikon's reliable features to help you take better pictures. But have... Read more...
In a follow-up to the distinctive 5.0MP dual-lens EasyShare V570, Kodak has announced the new 6.1MP EasyShare V610. The dual Schneider-Kreuznach C-Variogon zoom lenses are still carried over with the V610, but this time one has a focal length of 38-114mm while the second lens goes from 130-380mm. The V610 looks strikingly similar to its predecessor, but is slightly larger to accommodate the new 2.8" LCD screen (up from 2.5" on the V570). As with most new P&S digital cameras released these days, the V610 has the ability to capture 640x480 video... Read more...
Hey everyone. Well I finally got a chance to give the F.E.A.R. demo a run... it's all right. The game it's self, while not being anything we haven't seen before(except for the creepy little girl), seems to promise some intense action and killer graphics. However the demo seemed to need a little more polish, and unfortunately I am one of the ones who are experiencing horrible stuttering. If Monolith can iron out that issue and the other bugs that are found in the demo, we'll be in for a real treat later on this year. Oh, and speaking of the demo, Mr. Ghazi from TweakGuides has put out a quick guide... Read more...
