Some of us are familiar with the concept of “burner” cell phones from movies involving copious amounts of crime, but wouldn’t you know it, there are also legitimately legal uses for a temporary cell phone or phone number, such as job searches, Craigslist communications, and so on. The Burner app gave iOS users the ability to generate disposable phone numbers, and now the same is available to Android users, as well. The free app download comes with one free Burner number, which allows for incoming and outgoing calls and text messages, voicemail, and the ability to earn free credits... Read more...
The wide open worlds of 3D and Blu-ray are combining, and it's Asus that's bringing the two closer than ever. The company's new SBW-06C2X-U is a 3D Blu-ray writer, fully supporting BDXL, 6x Blu-ray writes, Blu-ray 3D playback, 2D-to-3D conversions, DVD upscaling to 1080p HD, 5.1 channel Dolby EX and DTS-HD and the ability to even play nice with Mac machines -- which cannot be ordered with Blu-ray from the factory, strangely enough. The device can be used upright or horizontal, and the sleek black form factor is certainly nice to look at. The unit is aimed at those who need to archive massive amounts... Read more...
Blu-ray burners aren't nearly as uncommon as they once were, but that doesn't make Plextor's new PX-LB950UE 12X external Blu-ray writer any less attractive. It's tough to find legitimate 12x BD burning options, and this one is bolstered by the addition of eSATA and USB 3.0. It won't handle BDXL, but discs having a capacity of 25GB or 50GB should be fine. This one also features PlexUTILITIES and Lightscribe direct disc labeling, and if you've been looking for new accessories to best take advantage of those new ports on your new machine...well, look no further. For the movie buffs, you'll be happy... Read more...
LaCie may be offering a portable Blu-ray drive for those who own ODD-less notebooks, but not everyone is ready or willing to invest in BD. Lite-On, which is a company that has made a name for themselves in the storage sector over the years, is catering to that group with the new eNAU608 8X External Slim DVD Writer. They're also catering to the folks who love to style things up, offering one of the only (if not the only) portable DVD writer with lids that can be swapped out. These decorative interchangeable top cover inserts are included with the drive, and they provide a unique level of customization... Read more...

In an effort to help make data backups less of a chore, EZPnP Technologies recently announced the new EZDigiMagic DM110 series of portable backup burners. These burners are designed to give you one-touch backup from flash memory cards or a PC to optical discs (CD, DVD or Blu-ray). EZDigiMagic Announces New Storage Products That Back Up Flash Memory Cards and Laptops... Read more...
A bunch of new netbooks launched at this year's International Consumer Electronics Show, but you'll still have to select an ultraportable (or larger) if you want a machine with an integrated optical drive. Still, Intel's new Atom N450 is likely to move quite a few more netbooks in early 2010, particularly amongst those who were waiting for the aged Atom N270 to be replaced. Optical drives aren't always needed, but when you do need one, you need one in the worst way. Samsung seems to understand this better than anyone, this week introducing a prototype of its new slim external DVD writer, the SE-S084D... Read more...
Blu-ray adoption may slowly be growing, but that's not stopping Samsung from trying to hasten the process. Today, the company introduced its first-ever internal Blu-ray Disc combo drive, with the ability to read BD-R and BD-ROM discs at 8x. It'll also read CDs at up to 40x and DVDs at up to 16x. With Samsung’s fast dual layer jumping algorithm, the new SH-B083 COMBO drive features an average access speed of 350ms which is much faster than any other drive on the market. The new drive reads Blu-ray discs and reads and writes CD/DVDs--in other words, this is the perfect drive for your bargain HTPC... Read more...
Looks like we've got ourselves quite the conundrum. Today, Pioneer has unleashed the planet's first-ever 12x Blu-ray Disc writer. Problem is, all writable Blu-ray media available on U.S. shelves is still at 6x. In other words, you can now buy a writer that'll toast media twice as fast as the media that's currently available. Like we said, it's a strange problem indeed.Still, for those with faith in the future (and optical media companies needing to catch up), Pioneer's BDR-205 Blu-ray Disc Computer Writer is an attractive piece. It's easily the industry's fastest BD writer, with all other rivals... Read more...
Just a few weeks back, Lite-On introduced its very own 8X Blu-ray Disc reader; today, Pioneer is one-upping that with its 8X Blu-ray Disc burner. The BDR-2203 picks up where the others have left off by adding in 8X BD writing (the fastest currently available for the format) as well as the traditional CD-R and DVD-R burning capabilities. Aimed at professional authoring gurus and choosy HTPC owners, this new internal optical drive provides users with a solid brand name, top-notch burn support and the ability to play back 1080p films -- all for less than a standalone deck, in some cases. With the... Read more...
If you're thinking that this one sounds familiar, it's because it is. Other World Computing just announced last October that it would be selling a quad interface external Blu-ray drive, and while its 4x BD-R burn speed was fine for most, those with time that's extraordinarily precious may long for something quicker. Now, there's the 8x version of the same drive, designed to cut those Blu-ray Disc burn times down by half while burning blank DVDs at up to 16x and blank CDs at up to 32x. This drive can write to an empty Blu-ray Disc at speeds of up to 2GB per minute, but the trick will be finding... Read more...
Sony just started selling an 18X DVD Burner. But when you've got your ripper software workin', you don't have time to waste. Lite-On ups the ante with 20X Lite-On launched two 20x internal models: the LH-20A1P and the LH-20A1H, the latter equipped with LightScribe to burn disc labels. The ATAPI-connected drives can handle all the usual formats: DVD°R/RW, DVD°R dual-layer, DVD-RAM and CD-RW at a variety of speeds. You'll have those rentals back to Blockbuster so fast they'll... Hey folks, We've got some news for you to digest on your lunch break :) HTPC news has sent us an article regarding bugs with the GeForce 6xxx series cards and using them as a HTPC(Home Theater Personal Computer). Probably a good idea to check it out if your thinking of making a media center out of your system. Anyway, here are the reviews... Thermaltake K450 (CL-P0075) AMD Athlon 64 Heatpipe Cooler @ Bjorn3D "The first time I heard about the Thermaltake K450 heatsink was when I started my search for a CPU cooler for my Athlon 64 FX 55 in my SLI system.   It used to be the case that the fastest optical drive was, by default, the best. Reducing CD burn times from 12 minutes to eight and then to six was considered significant evolutionary progress. But then a barrier was encountered, where the imperfect nature of mass-produced compact discs precluded, or at least made it much more difficult, to spin them faster than 52x. Rather than risk spontaneously disintegrating media, drive manufacturers have since focused their attention elsewhere. After all, we'd tend to agree that a polycarbonate saucer spinning in excess of 10,000 rotations per minute... Read more...
