When you walk into a Best Buy store, several major companies have a special corner all carved out for themselves to showcase their wares, including Google and Apple. Sony is about to join that group, and Samsung is expanding its presence beyond mobile to include the home theater. The “Sony Experience At Best Buy” will land in 350 stores and will offer customers “enhanced fixtures, interactive demonstration areas and dedicated, knowledgeable Sony Experience Experts.” Primarily, Sony will be showing off its TVs, ranging from less expensive HDTVs up to its 4K Ultra HD sets,... In what appears to be a Festivus/Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa/Boxing Day/Etc. miracle, Microsoft’s Surface 2 and Surface 2 Pro are selling out all over the place. All models except for the 64GB Surface (that’s last year’s Surface, mind you) are currently out of stock online at the Microsoft Store. There aren’t any at Walmart.com either, and Amazon listings show dwindling supplies. Several models are not available for shipping at Best Buy. First-gen Microsoft Surface RT Now of course, it’s entirely possible that Microsoft has purposely shorted the inventory to make it... Read more...
Leap Motion, a company that makes motion control technology, starting gaining attention earlier this year when it scored a couple of deals with manufacturers and Best Buy as well as making its own Leap Motion Controller and opening a beta program for app developers. The fruits of those labors begin the harvest today, as Leap Motion opens up its Airspace app store on the heels of shipping out preordered Leap Motion controllers last week. There are 75 apps in the store for today’s launch, and the hundreds of thousands of Leap Motion users will be able to download and launch them right away... Read more...
The Pebble smartwatch has come a long way. In the spring of 2012, the team behind Pebble racked up millions in funding on Kickstarter after launching a campaign aimed at raising just $100,000. Now, the smartwatch is available at electronics retailing giant Best Buy. The device is “coming soon”, but 9-to-5 Mac found a screenshot that indicates that Pebble would be in stock as of July 7th. The $149.99 smartwatch features more or less the same design Pebble has been teasing for over a year, although the only available color appears to be black, at least at this time. Pebble has a 2x1.3-inch... Read more...
If you want further evidence that Samsung has supplanted Apple in many ways, look no further than the fact that Best Buy will now feature Samsung Experience Shops in 1,400 of its locations, starting this month. “At the Samsung Experience Shops, consumers can experience Samsung’s full range of mobile products including smartphones, tablets, laptops, connected cameras and accessories, all in one location,” said Samsung in an emailed statement. “The shops enable consumers to interact with and buy Samsung’s latest mobile products and experience how the devices connect... In addition to tinkering with its return policy, it looks as if Best Buy is making another change in order to deal with one huge, lumbering reality: the Internet. A few months ago, Target announced that it would begin price-matching Amazon all year round in an effort to halt "showrooming" -- a term that describes the act of using a retail shop to check a product out, only to go home and buy it online for less. A few years ago, this process happened, but not in huge enough numbers to make material dents in the bottom line of brick-and-mortar retailers. Nowadays, it's notable. In fact, Circuit City... It seems like every company is producing tablets these days, and Best Buy is taking the plunge as well with the 9.7-inch Insignia Flex. Announced on Friday via Facebook, the Flex is coming to Best Buy stores on November 11th. Only a few specs were listed on the Facebook announcement, including that the Flex will have a dual-core 1GHz processor, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and 10 hours of battery life. According to a Reuters source, it will also have a front-facing camera and will weigh in at 1.45 pounds. The source also has the price tag: between $239-$259. As it has done before with its other... Best Buy's year hasn't been "easy," you might say. The company has experienced a great deal of turmoil, shutting the doors on a number of stores while seeing its CEO head for the exits after a potentially dodgy decision in his personal life. Then, there's the proposed buyout offer from the founder, along with public words of wisdom on how to get everything back on track. Now, however, Best Buy is starting anew, announcing a new CEO to lead the company going forward. The Board of Directors has appointed Hubert Joly to take the top seat, citing his "expertise in turnaround and growth across the media,... Read more...
It feels like forever ago that Circuit City bit the dust. Everything seemed to be humming along just fine, and suddenly, the wheels feel off. That left Best Buy, its main rival, in great shape. Suddenly, the world was its oyster. There really was no competition. But that's the issue: just because there was no issue on the retail front, online e-tailers began to eat away at Best Buy's share of the market. Over the past few years, Best Buy's growth has halted, and it has been forced to close a number of stores as sales slump. And things don't seem to be getting any better. Now, founding Richard Schulze... Read more...
It's really not a great time to be in retail consumer electronics sales. Or maybe it's just not a great time to be Best Buy. The United States' largest consumer electronics retailer hasn't had a great year, with its CEO stepping away and sales / profits sliding. Now, it's taking measures to ensure that it doesn't slip too far behind, and that's bad news for select employees. The company has just confirmed a 1.4% employee cut, representing 2,400 jobs. This is following the company's announcement that it would have to close 50 lower performing stores in the U.S. Best Buy will cut 600 of those jobs... Read more...
