Electronic Arts and Dice are busy putting the final touches on Battlefield 1 in preparation for its release on October 21, but it's not the only Battlefield title receiving attention. There's a new user interface in the works, one that's currently rolling out in beta form to a small audience playing Battlefield 4 before being made available to Battlefield 1 and Battlefield Hardline as well. The new UI is supposed to make playing with friends easier. You'll be able to create a squad before you even enter a game, along with have the ability to switch between Battlefield titles. The revamped UI will... Read more...
Exactly one month ago today, Dice took the veil off of the next major Battlefield title. The oddly-named Battlefield 1 will take a break from more futuristic combat to bring us way back to the World War I era. While World War II-styled games used to be poked fun at due to the sheer amount available, it seems now is the right time to give ourselves a new-age WW1 experience. To say that the hype surrounding this game is huge would be an understatement. While we've learned the hard lesson of not putting our complete faith into launch trailers, Battlefield 1's was so good that even if it doesn't live... Read more...
It is time for every history buff’s favorite activity: analyzing the historical accuracy of modern media. The YouTube channel The Great War recently published a video critiquing the historical accuracy of the Battlefield 1 trailer. The trailer for Battlefield 1 was released on May 6th, 2016. According to Indy Neidell, the voice behind The Great War video, the trailer is a hodgepodge of accuracy. Some of the most spectacular moments in the trailer, such as the tanks bursting into trenches or giant, ominous zeppelins hovering, are actually historically accurate. The trailer often shows soldiers wearing... Read more...
The Xbox One, PC, and Playstation 4 are definitely not all quiet on the western front. The Battlefield 1 trailer was just released and it is big, bad, and beautiful. Yesterday the concept art was leaked, but today we get the full trailer. The game is set in an alternate universe filled with WWI-era trench warfare, naval battles, and of course Zeppelins. EA Games and DICE stated, “With Battlefield 1 we set out to create some of the largest create, most dynamic battles in FPS history while continuing to tap into what fans love most about the franchise. One of the things that makes World War... Read more...
Battlefield 4 may be 18-months-old at this point, but DICE has made it clear that it has no intention of halting the production of new content. On its way in the near-future are two night maps, a community map, some new weapons, and even a new game mode called Gunmaster. The question that's been on many BF4 player's minds has been, "But is it free?", and BF4Central confirms that it is indeed free. For a game like BF4 which has as much paid add-on content as it does, this is great to see. The upcoming night maps feature will introduce night versions of Siege of Shanghai, Zavod 311, and Golmud Railway,... Read more...
One of the ongoing questions around AMD's Mantle API is how much support it would garner in actual shipping titles. True, EA had committed to adding support to the Frostbite engine, but that's the kind of announcement that can be quietly swept under the rug or might be integrated into the engine but with a minimal number of titles actually using it. So far this year, only Thief and BF4 have shipped with Mantle support -- the former is a minimally regarded game, while the latter has been dogged by play issues that have nothing to do with AMD's API but have distracted from its quality. Three other... Read more...
We've known for several days that EA would unveil a new chapter in the Battlefield universe at E3 2014, but the company has done more than that -- it also launched a surprise beta test for the upcoming Battlefield Hardline. The new game will be an urban cops-and-robbers shootout that drops players into the boots of either side in a more limited form of combat that's likely to focus on closer quarters and tighter objectives than the BF4 maps, some of which are sprawling affairs. The big surprise of E3 was that EA is launching a new closed beta program for PS4 and PC players that you can register... Read more...
No, your PC can't run Crysis online, not after June 30, 2014, anyway. It doesn't matter how big and burly your setup is, playing Crysis online will no longer be an option after next month, as it's one of about a trillion and a half titles (small exaggeration) getting booted offline this summer and beyond. The list of games starts with Lord of Ultima, the only title scheduled to be shut down today. On October 1, 2014, Electronic Arts will kick World Series of YAHTZEE (free for iOS) offline. Sandwiched in between those two titles are a whole bunch of popular games, all scheduled to go dark on June... Read more...
It's not uncommon for some governments to censor a video game before its release in their respective countries, but it's a bit rarer to see a title banned outright. Germany tends to come to many minds first when it comes to video game bannings, as it most notably outlaws the Wolfenstein series. But even countries like Australia have banned a good-sized collection of titles, including recent ones like Saints Row IV and The Witcher 2. The latest title to suffer this fate is Battlefield 4, and given much of the game's content, I'm sure it comes as no surprise that it's China behind this one. In the... Read more...
Battlefield fans, rejoice: EA has just announced a couple of dates worth paying attention to. On October 1, the company will launch the game's open beta, affecting the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. By all appearances, no pre-order is required to gain access. As previously planned, the game will launch on October 29. Along with this news, EA has also revealed the street dates for this game and others (FIFA 14, Madden NFL 25) for next-gen consoles: November 19th for Xbox One (21st for Europe), and November 12th for PlayStation 4 (29th for Europe). As we covered last month, Battlefield 4 is one... Read more...
If you're interested in how your computer might fare with the still-in-development Battlefield 2142, AMD Zone has a preview of the game's performance with the latest beta build of the game. When looking at the scores, keep in mind "beta build". "For our testing we ran Fraps for the same length of gameplay, recreating the same gameplay. There was no way to make a demo unless you have a server, and you can not currently make one with 2142. This means there could be some error in these results, but looking at them we feel they...
