Seagate is streamlining its Barracuda line of hard drives. To this end, the new Barracuda line will offer a SATA 6GB/second interface, 7200RPM spin speed, and up to 64MB cache. The drives will be available in capacities ranging from 250GB to 3TB. Seagate plans to end production of its Barracuda Green drive in February 2012.Seagate's Barracuda XT will be folded into the new Barracuda family. Today at HotHardware we take a look at the Barracuda Green 2TB hard drive from Seagate. Previously, the company's low power drives were designated with the LP nomenclature. But Seagate has made the change to a more recognizable industry standard naming convention. Let’s talk about SCSI for a moment. The disk interface which was once ubiquitous with high-end workstations and servers is now on the verge of obsolescence.   Seagate was surprisingly late to join the small, but elite club of storage manufacturers shipping one terabyte (1TB) class hard drives. Somewhat expectedly, the first out of the gate was Hitachi, who made it to market several months beforehand with a high-density five-platter 1TB hard disk design. The Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 was disclosed this morning, which the hard drive manufacturer touts as “the fastest high-capacity drive to date.” The 7200.11 is the company’s first 1TB hard disk drive, achieved with the use of only four platters (as opposed to five). Power consumption is modest at 8W idle, which they say, when taken into consideration with the four platters, would minimize heat that harms drives in the long run.
