Thanks to an agreement between Boingo and ASUS, ASUS Eee PC netbooks will now be preloaded with Boingo software, making it easy for users to locate and access more than 125,000 Boingo Wi-Fi hotspots worldwide. In addition, ASUS customers will get a discount of 50% on Boingo’s most popular Wi-Fi access services. Initially, the Boingo software will be pre-installed on the ASUS Eee PC 1005PE, 1008P, and 1201IN. Netbooks have taken the world by storm since their introduction in late 2007. This sub-notebook market has grown from the Asus Eee PC to multiple vendors and many models vying for superiority. Despite creating a line of CPUs seemingly targeted precisely for the netbook market, the Atom, Intel seems as though it just might be having second thoughts. Speaking at a Raymond James IT Supply Chain conference last week, Stu Pann, an Intel VP of sales and marketing admitted some problems with the new notebook form factor: "We originally thought Netbooks would be for emerging markets and younger kids, and there is some of that. In an interview with Laptop, ASUS' CEO, Jerry Shen, confirmed that ASUS will introduce a new Eee PC sometime in the second half of 2009 that will have a touch screen and run Windows 7. Given that Microsoft has said it plans general availability of the new operating system around January 2010, there’s a bit of a discrepancy here. Promising more details in the first quarter of next year (we’re guessing CES), Shen also indicated that the company doesn’t plan on putting Vista on any of the Eee PCs.Other noteworthy snippets from the interview: The company has sold four million Eee PCs to date.... It has been almost exactly one year since we saw the Asus Eee line of notebooks hit store shelves and it has been quite a year for this little side project from Asus. The original Asus Eee PC lineup, even with its flaws, turned out to be a massive surprise hit, as Asus hit a price and form factor that the market was finally ready to adopt for an ultra-mobile notebook.
