When AMD first announced plans to introduce triple-core processors back in September of last year, reaction to the news was mixed.  Some felt that AMD was simply planning to pass off partially functional Phenom X4 processors as triple-core products, making lemonade from lemons if you will.  Others thought it was a good way for AMD to increase bottom line profits, getting more usable die from a single silicon wafer and mitigating yield loss.  We were somewhat perplexed by the first reaction.  This is an age-old strategy in the semiconductor space and after all, the graphics guys... AMD has finally gone into full production with a new mask spin of their Phenom processor now dubbed the Phenom X4.  The new flagship 2.5GHz Phenom X4 9850 is representative of a new revision of the native quad-core Phenom silicon that resolves the well known TLB errata.  Quad-core Phenom X4 processors based on the new B3 revision silicon should be hitting store shelves in the not too distant future.  In addition to resolving the TLB bug, AMD is also unveiling some higher clocked Phenoms and tri-core and low-power models too.  We've got AMD's latest and greatest Phenom processor,...   It doesn't take a genius to figure out that AMD's initial Phenom processor launch didn't go exactly as planned.  The first batch of retail-ready Phenom processors were clocked lower than expectations and in the days leading up to the launch, the now infamous TLB bug reared its ugly head.  If you're not aware, all initial Phenom and Opteron quad-core processors based on the Barcelona architecture were plagued by an errata that could cause a system crash under certain circumstances.  The errata involves the processor's translation lookaside buffer or "TLB" and L3 cache. ... Although AMD sent out a press release last week stating that native quad-core chips based on their 'Barcelona' core would ship in August, some rumors are spreading today that claim AMD's Phenom processors for desktop machines won't ship until early 2008... "AMD intends to modify its process technology to increase the yield rate and frequencies of Phenom processors in order to improve the competitiveness of the CPUs against Intel's Penryn family, said the sources. AMD has just revealed another detail regarding their upcoming desktop quad-core processors that we wanted to share with you.  A few weeks ago, we talked about AMD's new branding for their desktop derivatives of the Barcelona core, now dubbed the Phenom FX, X4 and X2.  If you're unfamiliar with Phenom, the processors will be based on AMD's K10 architecture and will feature a faster on-die memory controller, support 64-bit and 128-bit SSE operations, and they'll be outfitted with 2MB of on-chip L2 cache (512KB dedicated per core) in addition to 2MB of shared L3 cache.  The new chips will also feature... Though leaks of the product have been circulating around the web for months now, today AMD is officially announcing their Phenom brand of processors based on their next generation K10 CPU core architecture, code named Barcelona.  The chip is built on AMD's 65nm process and is comprised of up to 4 32/64-bit capable CPU engines on a single die.  In addition, each core will have one of four Hypertransport links supporting it with AMD's Direct Connect Architecture that has higher throughput over traditional Front Side Bus architectures....
