Carriers far and wide have been angling to position themselves as more than just data and voice providers, and now, operators such as Verizon are starting to put their money up in order to prove the point. The company has this week confirmed that it will acquire EdgeCast, a content delivery network that has been around the block a time or two. The goal, according to Verizon, is to "enhance its video delivery and Web services capabilities," and it plans to integrate EdgeCast's "complementary capabilities to further improve and increase its ability to meet the exponential growth in online digital... When you think Intel, you probably think "CPU." You might also think "USB." But in truth, Intel does a lot more than invest in interconnectors and microprocessors, and increasingly, it is having to look towards entirely new pathways to success. The chip market just isn't as huge as it once was. Dell knows first-hand how tough it is to survive in a "post-PC" world, where fewer and fewer individuals and companies alike are buying new desktops. So, Intel's been acquiring new and emerging technology firms in order to position itself as a technology pioneer, not just a chipmaker. The latest acquisition... Read more...
Facebook said that it would enable Instagram to remain independent, and that it wouldn't ever cross any lines that would impact the user experience. Keeping true to that promise, Instagram itself (and not parent company Facebook) has just made a big acquisition: Luma. It's a video sharing app that almost no one has heard of... until now. Luma was previously known as Midnox, and while sharing was one of its features, video stabilization was the other. It's likely that Instagram executives are more interested in the latter. Luma will indeed be shutting down soon, as its employees focus all of their... Read more...
At this rate, Yahoo is apt to acquire a company a week -- or so it seems. Since Marissa Mayer came to town as CEO, she has been on an acquisition rampage. Company after company has been swooped up by Yahoo, reportedly due to Mayer's desire to procure talented developer and engineering resources at an accelerated rate. This week, IQ Engines came out of the woodwork in order to announce that it too has been acquired by Yahoo. The company's primary objective was to "transform the way people search and browse their photos by helping to process them intelligently." So, obviously, this particular move... Read more...
What do you get when you mesh LinkedIn and Pulse? InPulse? Perhaps, but it looks as if this is a real question now that LinkedIn has snapped up Pulse for a cool $90 million. That's right -- the job location board has acquired a news reading service. It may seem like an odd marriage at first, but it's just one (major) step in LinkedIn's agenda to becoming more than just a place where people connect to one another in order to locate new and exciting job opportunities. Pulse has grown into quite the popular app, delivering news in segments in a beautiful interface. The program was launched in 2010,... Read more...

Just over a month after IBM was rumored to be moments away from acquiring Sun Microsystems, lo and behold, Oracle has swooped in as the suitor. In a rather unexpected move, the sinking Oracle has just procured the sinking Sun Microsystems, obviously hoping that two laggards can somehow succeed rather than simply sink each other faster.Announced this morning, the "definitive agreement" will see Oracle acquire all of Sun's common stock for $9.50 per share in cash, which amounts to a breathtaking $7.4 billion -- or $5.6 billion net of Sun's cash and debt. While it's just a rumor at this point, it seems that NVIDIA is planning on breaking into the CPU business.  This isn't exactly surprising as the not-to-distant future looks like a place where CPUs have a dedicated GPU onboard and the future of add-in cards is unclear.“NVIDIA and VIA discussed three possible scenarios, including a strategic alliance, acquisition of only VIA's processor division, or the acquisition of the entire company, according to the sources. Though no deal was agreed upon, since VIA continues to see losses, the company is expected to open up negotiations again soon with... Read more...
