Rumors around the Internet suggest that Intel may be planning to cancel the Celeron brand in 8-12 months, due to significant overlap with Atom prices. At present, the Celeron P4500 (1.86GHz, dual-core) is $86 as is the T3100 (1.9GHz, 1MB L2). The upcoming Atom N550, due to launch in the third quarter, is a dual-core chip running at 1500MHz, with a price tag of $86. Last week, we discussed new documents that had been unsealed in Advanced Internet Technologies' ongoing lawsuit against Dell. The newly public evidence was fairly damning, as it showed Dell was aware that the Nichicon capacitors used in 2003-2005 OptiPlex machines had an astonishing 97 percent failure rate according to the company's own internal study. When Dell hired an indepedent contractor to evaluate the situation, the company reported 10x more failures than the OEM had previously estimated. Samsung is the first manufacturer to utilize 30-nanometer scale technology for NAND flash chips. It introduced its very powerful and very small 64 gigabit flash chip earlier today. 30 nanonmeters is 30 billionths of a meter.  A single chip could be assembled from the maximum 16 of these little wonders that would hold the equivalent of 80 DVDS.  Interestingly, the manufacturing process Samsung is using is capable of even finer circuit size and greater miniaturization. Researchers at the Georgia Electronic Design Center (GEDC) of Georgia Institute of Technology are working on ultra-fast wireless connectivity solutions. If current efforts eventually lead to success, it could mean the end of the wired computer. The team of researchers propose the use of extremely high radio frequencies to attain broad bandwidth and high data transfer rates.
