We’ve seen a lot of cool stuff coming out of this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, but one of the most interesting has to be Cyberpower PC’s Fang Trinity gaming PC. The Fang Trinity features a unique tri-zone case from DeepCool (dubbed the Trinity concept) that looks somewhat like a Star Wars Imperial Shuttle. Each zone contains an array of components and the wiring is snaked through the case through a central cylinder that also houses the power button. After struggling as of late in the market, AMD is mounting an offensive against very stiff competition, and part of that effort is the next generation of the company’s APUs. Codenamed “Richland”, we knew that these chips will be built on Piledriver CPU cores just as the last generation Trinity APUs are, and that Richland APUs will have an updated graphics core. AMD's fourth quarter results for 2012 are in, and they're as bad as everyone has been expecting. The only good news is that since everyone has been expecting it, the company's stock shouldn't take too hard a hammering. Total revenue for the year was $5.42B, down 17.5% year-on-year. Gross margins fell from 45% to 23% thanks to a much higher cost of sales. AMD ended 2012 with a $1.1B net loss, compared to a $486M income in 2011. Computing Solutions (CPU sales) revenue fell to $4B for the year, down from $5B in 2011. Graphics revenue was down 10% year-on-year, to $1.41B in sales, as opposed to $1.565B... Read more...
Numbers from Jon Peddie Research on the current state of the graphics market point to Nvidia as the big winner of Q3 2012, against both Intel and AMD. Intel's share of desktop and notebook sales both dropped roughly 8%, while AMD took a much smaller hit in desktops (2%) and a far greater hit in notebooks, sliding a whopping 17%. For Sunnyvale, the bad news doesn't stop there. JPR reports that quarter-on-quarter sales of desktop APUs fell 30%, notebook APUs slid 4.7%, and overall PC graphics shipments were down 10.7%. Asus today lifted the curtain on its F2A85 Series of motherboards built around AMD's new A85X chipset and FM2 socket. The boards are designed and optimized for the Sunnyvale chip designer's second generation "Trinity" Accelerated Processing Units (APUs), which are expected to launch next month. One of the things Asus continues to tout is the inclusion of Dual Intelligent Processors, which are two onboard chips -- EPU (Energy Processing Unit) and TPU (TurboV Processing Unit). Trusted sources we've spoken to in the semiconductor industry have implied that TSMC is considering a partnership with Apple that would realign the manufacturer's technology roadmap and fundamentally alter the balance of power between the foundry and its other customers. Morris Chang, TSMC's CEO, spoke about the possibility of closer collaboration with its customers in general terms last Friday, but at the time we thought the likelihood of an Apple alliance was unlikely. Earlier today, Vijay Rakesh, an analyst with Sterne Agee, cut his rating on AMD to Neutral from Buy, based on suggestions that PC manufacturers were being generally cautious about sales over the next couple of quarters. Rakesh notes that Trinity is tracking far more design wins than Llano did at this point last year, but believes sales will slow ahead of the Windows 8 launch, writing that "OEMs cautious on back to school. Rumor around the 'Net is that AMD's Bulldozer follow-up, codenamed Vishera, could drop in early Q4 this year. The new AMD 8350, as its known, will supposedly be a four-module/eight-core design clocked at 4GHz (4.2GHz Turbo Mode) with a 125W TDP. Vishera could potentially deliver what last year's Bulldozer didn't; AMD's latest CPU was widely panned for failing to meet most of its performance, clockspeed, and power consumption targets.
