Kingston is looking to strut its stuff in the data center arena with the arrival of the new DCP1000 family of PCIe SSDs. The storage company says that it is targeting the SSDs for use in online transaction processing (OLTP), database optimization, and virtual desktop infrastructure among other tasks required by enterprise customers. When it comes to the global computer storage market, it appears that Toshiba is demonstrating strong gains in a sector that is dominated by the likes of bellwethers like Seagate and Western Digital, which appeared previously to be the last standing competitors in an arena with heavy consolidation. It’s hard to argue with the speed, small form-factors and energy efficiency of SSDs; but when it comes to price-per-gigabyte (especially in large capacities drives), hard disk drives (HDDs) still reign supreme. Western Digital is the king of the hard drive market but up to now has been a non-factor in SSDs. However, with its purchase of solid state storage giant, SanDisk, the company immediately leaped to the forefront of the market in one fell swoop. Now the company is entering the consumer/commercial SSD market with WD Green and WD Blue SSDs, using a naming scheme borrowed from its hard drive line and technology acquired from SanDisk. A few months back, Intel updated its enterprise-class solid state storage line-up with a new series of NVMe-based drives – the DC P3520 series -- featuring IMFT 3D MLC NAND flash memory. Like some of its other high-end offerings, the drives featured Intel’s native NVMe PCI Express controller, but the use of more affordable 3D MLC NAND allowed Intel to reduce costs, while keeping endurance relatively high.Since some of the first consumer-class solid state drives hit the scene, Intel has been known to push the envelope in the space, and ultimately drive prices down. With a name like 'KillDisk', it's not hard to imagine what the malware it represents sets out to accomplish. Add on a good helping of ransomware, and KillDisk becomes the kind of malware that can give people nightmares, and not to mention a lot of undue stress. In the past, KillDisk malware has infected computers in the industrial sector, with the goal of rendering servers or desktops essentially unbootable. If you notice that solid state drives are getting more expensive, blame smartphones, at least in part. Smartphone makers are drying up the supply of NAND flash memory chips and to make matters worse, the transition from 2D NAND to 3D NAND manufacturing is putting added strain on how the overall output of chips.
