Prepare to meet Lily, the world's first throw-and-shoot camera and the first product from Lily Robotics. Lily is self-flying unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) camera that is designed to follow you, committing your movements to video and/or still photos, via a small circular GPS-enabled tracker that you keep on or near you.  A single tap on the tracker gets the party started, readying Lily to follow a defined set of commands, all while maintaining a tight focus on you. And armed with a camera that company CTO and co-founder Henry Bradlow says is roughly equivalent to the GoPro Hero 3, Lily... Read more...
Earlier this month we covered Walmart's burgeoning partnership with the Ultraviolet DRM system backed by major Hollywood studios and their plans to "assist" customers in registering DVDs with the Ultraviolet system. Walmart has since announced additional details to the program and it's a clever attempt to drive more users to Vudu, Walmart's subsidiary movie streaming service. Here's how the service works. "Starting April 16th, 2012 in more than 3,500 stores, Walmart customers will be able to bring their DVD and Blu-ray collections to Walmart and receive digital access to their favorite titles from... For the past few years, display manufacturers of every stripe have been singing the praises of 3-D displays and their various levels of support for the nascent standard. Consumers, unfortunately, haven't been playing along. Despite marketing initiatives, high-profile film releases, and prominent support for 3-D gaming from the likes of Sony and Nvidia, 3-D isn't catching very well. TV manufacturers are grappling with some of the same difficulties that've slowed down Blu-ray adoption. It took various manufacturers and the FCC decades to create an HDTV broadcast standard that satisfied the government's... Read more...
We aren't sure if you've noticed, but HD video is "in." Nearly every major smartphone launching now has HD video recording, with the iPhone 4 even getting an iMovie app to edit all of that high resolution footage. Traditionally, PC webcams have lagged behind on the technology front. Most people have seemed satisfied with low-res VGA video chats for awhile now, with only those major Cisco teleprescence systems offering true HD conferencing. The time to bring that tech into the consumer arena is now, with Logitech at the front of the pack. The company has today revealed a full lineup of HD webcams,... Read more...
Check monthly console sales from the XBox's launch in 2005 to the present day, and Sony's PS3 lags both the XBox 360 and the Wii. According to the most recent data available, Sony has sold 33.5 million PS3's, Microsoft is at 39 million XBox 360s, and Nintendo has moved 67.45 million Wiis. It comes as something of a surprise, then, to hear Dave Mercer, an analyst with Strategy Analytics Connected Home Devices, predicting that Sony's PS3 will ultimately outsell the Wii over its lifetime. Mercer predicts sales of 103 million units for the Wii compared to 127 million for the PS3."Nintendo has done... Read more...

Generally speaking, webcams aren't all that interesting in and of themselves. In fact, most notebooks ship with some sort of lackluster webcam built right in, and considering that video calling still hasn't gone mainstream, most folks sort of ignore the thing. Microsoft has developed quite a few nice ones for those really into keeping that face-to-face bond across seas and county lines, but now it's the little-known Hercules joining the fray. According to the company, its Dualpix HD720p is ushering in a "new era" of mini webcams, and considering that it captures your lovely face in high-def, we'd... Read more...

Confirming rumors that we'd heard over the past few weeks, Nikon has today introduced two new Digital SLR cameras in its expanding Dxxx lineup. The two cameras couldn't possibly be more different, with one of these aimed at amateur/professionals and the other aimed at those looking to finally make the leap to the DSLR world. Starting with the former (the D300s), we've got a new higher-end model that seems like a souped-up D90 in most respects. Basic specs include a 12.3MP CMOS sensor, a 51-point autofocus system, SD and CompactFlash memory card slots, one-button LiveView, a new Quiet Shutter Release... Read more...
