Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) plans to use resonant clock mesh technology developed by Cyclos Semiconductor to push its Piledriver processor line to 4GHz and beyond, the company announced at the International Solid State Circuits Conferences (ISSCC) in San Francisco. Cyclos is the only supplier of resonant clock mesh IP, which AMD has licensed and implemented into its x86 Piledriver core for Opteron server processors and Accelerated Processing Units (APUs). VR-Zone is reporting that Intel will finally break the 4GHz barrier with their Nehalem core, which is to be manufactured using a 45nm process node. "Based on the 45nm Nehalem architecture, Intel aims to bring Bloomfield clock speed above 4GHz in 2008. MadShrimps has posted a brief article which outlines a budget-oriented mission to overclock two different Intel CPU's well beyond 4GHz. Both the moderately priced Pentium D 805 and the Celeron D 356 were placed in an ASUS P5LD2 motherboard and cooled by a Thermaltake Sonic Tower heatsink. Seeing 4GHz in the rear-view mirror using standard air-cooling is certainly an accomplishment. The fact that it was done for such little money is nothing short of impressive. Victor Wang has posted some interesting infomration over at XtremeSystems regarding Intel's upcoming Conroe processor. Using a Conroe sample running at 2.4GHz and an Intel 965G motherboard, he was able to run a healthy suite of benchmarks and has posted the results for your viewing pleasure.
