Today at HotHardware we take a look at the Barracuda Green 2TB hard drive from Seagate. Previously, the company's low power drives were designated with the LP nomenclature. But Seagate has made the change to a more recognizable industry standard naming convention. The 2TB Green drive sports a 5900 RPM spindle speed, SATA 6 GB/s interface, 64 MB cache, Advanced Format technology, and Seagate SmartAlign technology for easier integration. Do all of these features entice you enough to put the Barracuda Green on your upgrade list? Need more information? Read on to find out how well this drive performs... Read more...
With the massive amounts of digital content now at our disposals, spend enough time in front of a system, and eventually it'll require a storage upgrade. We live in a digital world where games take up more storage space, cameras generate larger images, and camcorders produce higher definition videos than ever before. It's only a matter of time before even the average user saturates the drive in their PC. Throwing a SSD into the system as an OS drive will undoubtedly improve its performance, but it doesn't address the need for more storage. That's why the need for traditional... Read more...
Seagate has just introduced a new hard drive that hits not one, but two sweet spots: it's 2TB in size, and it supports the new 6Gb/s interface. It's also an Enterprise drive, which means that it's extremely reliable and useful for always-on or server-based applications. The industry's first 2TB 6Gb/s SAS Enterprise Drive is now shipping, with the Constellation ES offering a 7200RPM spindle rate, PowerChoice optimized power and cooling technology, and a government-grade security option. There's no clear mention of how expensive this will be, but if the 2TB version is just too high, there will also... Read more...
The 2TB desktop hard drive sector just got another player. Samsung has introduced its newest performance drive today, taking it 500GB further than the 1.5TB F2EG that was announced in March. This new 2TB drive (F3EG) still maintains the EcoGreen label, with this model being capable of storing up to 880 hours of DVD video or 500,000 or more songs in MP3 format. The EcoGreen label involves the use of the EcoTriangle: eco-friendly components, low-power and low-noise operation technology. At the end of the day, though, we're just glad to see another 2TB option on the market, with this one available... Read more...
It happens to all of us at some point. We constantly run short of hard drive space, no matter how incredibly cavernous you thought your current drive was when you bought it. Did you really expect Dragon Age: Origins and Borderlands to soak up almost thirty gigabytes between them? Didn't think so. You either shove Office 2007 and Photoshop CS aside to make some room for your latest losslessly-ripped music and RAW photos, or grab a drive that offers up more capacity, say up to 2TB--such as the ones we're going to be evaluating here. You know the contenders. These aren't solid state drives full of... Read more...

Surely you remember Hitachi's foray into the wide, speedy world of 2TB 7200RPM hard drives, right? Considering that it was less than a week ago, we sure hope so! Ever since TDK issued a promising new line of solid state drives back in May, the drive and optical media manufacturer has remained eerily quiet on further plans. According to a new report, however, the company may be aiming to compete with the likes of Seagate, Western Digital and Hitachi in the "big boy" desktop HDD space. If all goes well, we could see hard drives as large as 2TB in the desktop 3.5" arena and 620GB in the notebook-friendly 2.5" format by January of 2010. The information is being gleaned from a recent presentation to financial analysts. As it stands, the "current highest density... Read more...
Western Digital was visibly proud when they introduced the planet's first 2TB desktop hard drive back in April. You might say it was just as proud as Hitachi was when they introduced the world's first 1TB desktop hard drive back in early 2007. Regardless of actual pride levels, there's no doubt that Hitachi is beaming today with this announcement. The device you're looking at below is the industry's first 2TB desktop hard drive with a 7200RPM spindle rate. If you'll recall, the 2TB Caviar Green HDD we took a look at earlier this year spun at a lathargic 5400RPM. WD called it "green," performance... Read more...
Late last week Western Digital briefed us on their forthcoming release of a new addition to their Caviar Green family of hard drives.  No we're not talking some sort of exotic sushi or cracker-bound fish egg here either but rather a new, rather humongous and environmentally more friendly hard drive from WD, that can be considered an "industry first".  Today marks the day that standard rotational media breaks the 2TB barrier.  Let's spell that out a bit more clearly again here; T-W-O full Terabytes of SATA-based storage on a single, standard 3.5" hard drive.  Those... As the visual quality of video games, movies, music, and other entertainment media improve, HDD manufacturers continue the endless pursuit of higher capacity in order to keep up with the demand. One such manufacturer, Fujitsu Computer Products of America, may have a leading position in the HDD market of tomorrow. In fact, Fujitsu is working on a technology that will allow 2.5 inch HDDs to carry up to 1.2TB of storage space. “The company is announcing later this week that it has created ideally ‘ordered’ alumina nanohole patterns for isolated bit-by-bit recording on a large disk area. With that... Read more...
