id's Upcoming FPS Rage: Wow

id's Upcoming FPS Rage: Wow

A recent addition to the HotHardware forums, CRYSJON, posted a link to an awesome trailer for id's just announced first person shooter / driving game hybrid "Rage" that you all just have to see.  The game takes place in a post apocalyptic Earth decimated by a comet's impact.  But Rage will not be the typical indoor id shooter.  Rage is a new franchise for id and is a major departure from Quake or Doom...

During closed-door briefings at QuakeCon this past weekend, id revealed that the game is in simultaneous development for the PC, PS3, Xbox360 and Macintosh, and that it uses the 'id tech 5' engine which employs a second generation version of id's Megatexture technology.  As you can see in the screenshots above (captured from the trailer), the game will involve a combination of shooting and driving, and the visuals are nothing short of amazing.

Unfortunately, id hasn't given a solid release date, saying only that Rage will ship "when it's done."  Let's hope that means soon in geek-speak - this is definitely something we're looking forward to.

You have to watch the video, this game visually looks very impressive. Definitely a huge step forward over anything id has done to date. Versus Crysis...I'm not so sure. Each one has their merits though.

The new Id engine does look dialed. It's amazing what they can do with the power of DX10 capable graphics engines. I think the envrionments look far more realistic than Crysis, at least from what I've seen in recent screen-shots. However, it's all about game play. We'll have to wait and see which one is more "playable".

Pretty sure Rage is going to be OpenGL based considering it's coming from id, regardless you're right - it is all about game play. But it sure does look fun in the trailer! :)

I should have noted "DX10 class" graphics engines... Agreed, more than likely anything coming out of Id would be OpenGL-based.

That dude with the funky tassle-hat is just amazing to watch in motion. The cinematic effects are fantastic. Character movement in the trailer also looks so life-like, it's like watching movie, not animation.

Like I told some people on other boards when I found this, You cannot compare crysis of course (totally different game), looks like a whole nother genre(racing, fps, rpg story line..) People are looking at it as a very detailed carmageddon, which Im not so sure it will be, but I could be wrong...anyway, can't wait to check out more trailers and possibly some gameplay within the next 6 months or so...Probably not going to see a full game until 1st or second quarter of next year(2008). But everyone should keep this on there watch list for sure...

Yeah I can see some resemblance in terms of textures compared to Doom3/Quake4.. Definetly seems like an ID Game!

Looks HOT.. hehe It will probably be liked by Old Carmageddon fans like myself :p

Im more excited about ID Tech5 engine Carmack designed which this game uses, Artist can do their best work and the game's performance doesnt suffer or at least has very minimal effect on performance.

I listend to Carmack at Quakecon speech and its impresive you can design your game and with the ID tools can spit out the game in proper code for any platform wether 360 pc or ps3. Its not magic though and would still require devs to tweak some code but still that is impresive. Another note he said that was interesting is they have had a lot of problems with the ps3, he said theoretically the ps3 is more powerful, but the power isnt useable or realistic and infact they keep runing out of memory in their ps3 builds.. you can listen to his full speech downloadable from fileplanet.com, the only sad part is when listening to John Carmack speeches you tend to feel like an idiot in comparison. heh

NEW RAGE INFO as of Aug 7th 2007

Great GFX are always nice, but gameplay is paramount.
