Extrapolate from this what you will, but when it comes to browsing the Web, Apple's iPhone 5
device is generating more traffic than Samsung's Galaxy S III
, according to data collected by Chitika Insights. The research firm says it conducted a "user agent analysis on millions of mobile ad impressions," and did so for a week straight (October 3rd through October 9th). During that time, 56 percent of the Web traffic came from iPhone 5 users.
"The Galaxy S III has been available in the U.S. for nearly four months, and posted impressive sales figures – even beating out domestic sales of the iPhone 4S in August 2012. However, only 18 days since the public release of the iPhone 5, the newest Apple device has overtaken the Galaxy S III in terms of Web traffic volume," Chitika Insights points out.
Chitika Insights theorizes that "record-breaking sales" and the iPhone's new-found ability to surf at 4G across the board are the factors explaining this "tremendous growth" shift in the mobile ecosystem. What that means for companies targeting mobile users is that Apple owners are more marketable, though the split is such that they'd be wise to continue optimizing online content for both devices.
