iPad Boosts Tablet Sales

Apple has done it again: The company has created a product that people want and in the process, the company has boosted sales of an entire market segment. Although tablet PCs have been on the market for years, many consumers haven't paid attention to this market segment until Apple announced the iPad. Now, research firm IDC is claiming the iPad could spur a sixfold increase in tablet sales by 2014.

In a statement, IDC said worldwide shipments will rise from 7.6 million to 46 million this year. The firm expects 398 million portable personal computers to ship in 2014. Apple's iPad was introduced last month. In just 28 days, Apple has already sold 1 million of the touch-screen tablets. Due to the popularity of the tablet, Apple decided to delay overseas shipments about a month so the company could better keep up with demand.

Other manufacturers such as HP are taking notice of Apple's success and the huge potential for growth in the tablet space and have begun to look at options to create their own tablets. In fact, we've already heard quite a bit about HP's Slate tablet. Sony has also considered making its own tablet. Additionally, Google and Verizon Wireless are said to be working on an upcoming Tablet PC running Android.

Because the tablets are primarily marketed as entertainment devices, IDC believes the success of tablet computers will be driven by the number of applications available for the tablets. Apple certainly has a bit of a head-start in this category with its App Store.

Umm as far as it goes Apple is the only provider of Slate type devices in the consumer market period. Yes; there are some slate devices on the professional side which have been around for years. They are only used by a small and direct concentration of professional users. So Apple in most cases in the consumer market is the only provider for it.

In the end, and just like everything else Apple has ever done in there proprietary Boutiqueesque style I think they will be pushed to there corner of the market. This is indicative much like the iPhone they owned a market in the US pretty much. However; over time, with competition (Android, Palm etc), they are being run out of there market.

I think by fall we are going to see considerable more development on this. If I owned Apple stock I would be looking for a peak if it has not already passed to drop my shares.

That is for sure! I see them as previously stated; being put back in there special kids corner soon, by the decisions they have made already, and continue to make.

rofl good question Der Meister. It seems very funny to me the trust garners from the uneducated in general. Look at new components or components types and there adoption ratio especially by the general market. You will notice as I am sure you already know, that these ratios are very low.

Generally the people like many of us may jump in on a new device or device type if we judge it to be worth it. Then no one else does at least in the general market. However; if you stick an Apple sticker on it the same people will line up to be used as hardware/software beta testers, and pay top dollar to do it!

This is rather baffling to me....

We will see where it all goes when the big guns start dropping this type of device late fall.
