Market research firm comScore shared its U.S. subscribers market share report heading into the weekend, and there weren't many surprises to be found. For example, Samsung
is still the top maker of mobile devices in the U.S., in terms of market share, leading the way with a 25.9 percent share at the end of April 2012, up slightly from 25.4 percent at the end of January 2012. LG (No. 2) dropped half a percentage point to 19.2 percent, while Apple
(No. 3) stayed in third place with a 14.4 percent share, up 1.6 percent in the past three months.
As for OS penetration, Google
is the top dog in the U.S., with over half (50.8 percent) of all mobile devices rocking Google's open source platform. Interestingly, Android's numbers are down 0.2 percent from one month ago, but up 2.2 percent from the beginning of the year. Apple's iOS platform, meanwhile, jumped 1.9 percent from 29.5 percent in January to 31.4 percent by the end of April. These were the only two mobile platforms to gain market share in the same time period. RIM
was the big loser for the quarter, dropping 3.6 percent to end April with an 11.6 percent share, while Microsoft
(4 percent) and Symbian (1.3 percent) slid backwards 0.4 percent and 0.2 percent, respectively.

According to comScore, 234 million Americans age 13 and older used mobile devices for the three-month period ending in April. Out of those, 107 million owned smartphones, up 6 percent versus January. Nearly three quarters (74.1 percent) of American mobile users send/receive text messages on their mobile device.
