Why Google Doesn't Want MS To Own Yahoo

We recently reported that Google offered Yahoo unspecified aid to fight off a potential hostile takeover from Microsoft.  What we didn't know was the reasoning behind that, but we were able to speculate.  Now we're getting answers straight from Google co-founder Sergey Brin:

"The Internet has evolved from open standards, having a diversity of companies," Brin told The Associated Press after the event. "And when you start to have companies that control the operating system, control the browsers, they really tie up the top Web sites, and can be used to manipulate stuff in various ways. I think that's unnerving."

Microsoft has a lot riding on their various software products, especially Office.  Google seems to be of the mind that such products will mostly be web-delivered one day and that eventually OSes won't be much more than a preference as a result.  The idea of letting Microsoft potentially lock early web-based products into a given OS might kill the whole concept before it really takes off, and that's not something that Google really wants to see.

MS just trying to line their pockets a little more....its always nice to see them be denied by a "littler guy" -- who doesn't root for the underdog right?

I hope that Microsoft does buy Yahoo. Google takes too many liberties in punishing web sites that work to achieve better rankings. Google needs to be brought back down to earth.

why would Microsoft not want a slice of the pie. They are a business and Google isnt some righteous company in it for the good of man kind. No they make billions. Really it was underhanded for google to interfere with the Microsoft buy out which Yahoo's now EX ceo wanted to happen. Its a stupid move that will cost them when google eats them for breakfast and then buys them for a fraction of what Microsoft was offering 5 years from now.

I feel a bit sour about this deal. I hope the shareholders vote against this. I like quite a few features from Yahoo...Yahoo Answers being one of them. I don't want to see Microsoft take yahoo and butcher it up for what they "think" is the best platform...Only to end up destroying Yahoo's business strengths. We'll have to see how every unfolds, but I really do hope this acquisition fails.

I have limited buisness knowledge, but deffinately like Yahoo the way it. If MS plans to make lots of changes then I'm against the deal.

Indeed, microsoft is DEFINITELY in trouble considering the nature of google and yahoo's business plans succeeding. But I believe Microsoft should just attempt to follow suite, not take in yahoo. I really don't want to see Yahoo Answers disappear >_<....It's a great way of getting quick answers around specific subjects quickly and easily ^_^. (By quick I literally mean within 5 minutes of posting =P)
