Western Digital Intros 8TB ShareSpace NAS System

Well, wouldn't you know it? Western Digital has wasted no time in finding a home for its recently revealed 2TB WD Caviar Green hard drive, as it has today announced an 8TB version (4 x 2TB) version of its ShareSpace network storage system. Curiously introduced alongside dozens of new cameras at the PMA trade show in Las Vegas, Nevada, the new drive even promises a bit more than just increased capacity.

Indeed, it is said to be up to 30 percent faster than prior models, and it also supports DLNA media streaming. Aimed at both small businesses and archive junkies alike, the four-bay device offers up significant storage without taking up a significant amount of space. It also comes with WD Anywhere Backup software, not to mention the media sharing software that streams material from networked PCs or game consoles. Of note, there's also gigabit Ethernet, RAID 0/1/5 capabilities and an e-mail alert system that monitors drive and system health and sends you an e-mail if a problem is detected. One small inclusion that we found awfully useful was the one-touch transfer, which enables owners to plug a USB 2.0 hard drive into the front-mounted USB port and have all of that data moved easily onto the new WD ShareSpace system.

Western Digital is selling the 8TB ShareSpace right now for $1699.99, and that includes a three-year warranty.
