If you're looking to score the best deal on an iPhone, typically the best time to pounce is right before Apple launches a new model. When that time of year comes around, retailers inevitably slash prices on current generation models to make room for the new handsets, as Walmart is about to do with its stockpile of iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S handsets.

The folks at CNET have it on good authority (a Walmart spokesperson) that Walmart's planning to reduce the price of the iPhone 5C from $29 to just $0.97 effective Thursday at 9 AM local time. Walmart is also planning to cut the price of its remaining iPhone 5S inventory, which will drop from $99 to $79.

All color options are included in the price reductions. They also require a two-year service agreement with AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, or U.S. Cellular.

Though no announcement has been made, the price cuts are obvious indicators of Apple's impending launch of the iPhone 6 next month. Leaked photos, documents, videos, and information have been hitting the web at a steady pace for the last several months, most of which point to Apple releasing 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch versions of its next flagship handset.

I feel like a device should be discounted more than $20 when it's a year old and about to be replaced. Why would anyone think an ip5s is a good deal at $99 when the ip6 will be $199? Save for another month or 2 and buy the new model. The ip5c is a complete ripoff even at $0.

I can't agree with this. The iPhone 5 is still one of the best phones out there (unless you hate iOS and/or Apple in general), and at $79, that's $120 cheaper than it was going for last year. It's easy to say 'Wait for the iPhone 6 and get it for $199,' but that's an extra $120 and assumes pricing will stay the same (it probably will, but given the screen size rumors, it wouldn't be surprising if prices went up, either). And if you need to buy more than one -- you and your spouse, for example -- that $120 difference balloons to $240.

Paul; I can see how in a family plan especially if kids are involved then this price cut would make a difference. If I had a wife though, she would be on her own when it comes to upgrading her phone! I would always make sure I got what i wanted hehe. Probably why I am not married ;)
