WD Intros 4TB My Book Studio Edition II Drive

You just knew Western Digital would take every chance it could to milk every last ounce of profitability from its extra-spacious 2TB SATA hard drive, didn't you? After launching the drive for high-end workstations and desktops earlier this year, WD has crammed two of them into a single external drive. The world's first 4TB external HDD is being labeled the My Book Studio Edition II, which is now twice as roomy as the same drive a year ago.


Designed to work with Mac and PC systems, the quad-interface drive can connect via eSATA, FireWire 400, FireWire 800 and USB 2.0. It's also fully compatible with Apple's Time Machine backup system, and since it's a dual-drive system, it comes wired in a RAID 0 configuration. WD's aiming this one at creative professionals, workgroups and small office, but these days, we'd say most any PC enthusiast could find a use for 4TB of RAIDed storage. As expected, both internal drives utilize Western Digital's GreenPower technology to keep power usage to a minimum. Folks looking to keep their data backed up will appreciate the bundled software to do just that with just a click, and the inbuilt capacity gauge also gives you an easy look at just how much space you've got to spare. The drive is available right now for $649.99 with a 5-year limited warranty.
