Verizon Wireless CEO Shows No Interest In Buying Sprint

The mobile bombshell that was dropped this past Sunday is still having aftershocks throughout the industry. Even as CTIA Wireless 2011 chugs along, there's an overriding notion that the top mobile story of the week involves AT&T and T-Mobile USA. What's really interesting is just how quick Sprint was to condemn the deal, so we expected a similar reaction from Verizon Wireless. But that's not the case, not by a long shot. While Sprint is upset that the deal may take place, Verizon Wireless seems to not care at all.

In an interview with Reuters, the company's CEO said that he has no real interest in buying Sprint, and he doesn't plan on opposing T-Mobile/AT&T. Why? Because he'd rather focus on being the most profitable carrier in the States, not necessarily the largest by subscriber count. Here's the money quote: "We're not interested in Sprint. We don't need them." That's a very, very confident thing to say, and it speaks as much about Sprint as it does about VZW.



Dan Mead also had something to say about the chances for this monolithic deal going through: "Anything can go through if you make enough concessions." In other words, VZW is probably already gearing up for battle against what will soon (maybe) become the largest carrier in the States. This should be a fun one to watch, that's for sure.

I am with both of you on this. I am currently on Verizon, but with no contract. I am really attracted to the EVO 3D, but am actually thinking about grabbing and EVO. My reasoning with this is that it is still a very capable unit, plus when the 3D drops I will be able to buy one outright for cheap. Then I can do whatever I want with the ROM's I run on it without having to worry about voiding the warranty etc. Plus I won't have to pay 2-300 dollars. I am imagining I could get one for say 50 then, and an extra battery for 10-20 as well as any accessory specifically for the EVO at some seriously reduced prices. I don't know thats not final decision, but is my thoughts on the matter. I don't know the Sprint Nexus S is pretty sweet to as well as a couple of other that have been demo's but not yet released. I might just grab an EVO for now as well to see where the Galaxy S2 goes not to mention a couple other units we have seen that will be dropping shortly. As far as Sprint as a provider I would be with them now if the had sent me a home terminal unit. They have agreed to do so if I come back, so it is just when as far as it goes it looks like for me. Verizon and At&t are ridiculous with there smart phone charges as well as allowances.
