The iPad! It's coming to Verizon Wireless! Call your parents! Call your
friends! Oh, wait...it's not what you think. Not exactly, anyway. As of
now, there is no CDMA-equipped iPad
. The only iPad with 3G is one that
functions on a GSM network, or AT&T's network in the U.S. But sure
enough, VZW will soon be stocking Apple's white-hot tablet. So, what's
the real deal?
Verizon Wireless will offer three bundles, all featuring an iPad Wi-Fi
model and a Verizon MiFi 2200 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot, for a
suggested retail price of $629.99 for iPad Wi-Fi 16GB + MiFi, $729.99
for iPad Wi-Fi 32GB + MiFi and $829.99 for iPad Wi-Fi 64GB + MiFi. Read
that over again. The only iPad model that Verizon will sell is the Wi-Fi
only model. In other words, this isn't an iPad that has a CDMA module
built-in, and you'll still have to power on that MiFi separately in
order to get it online when a Wi-Fi spot isn't available. It's not the
most convienient, that's for sure, but it does give users another option
if they travel to places where AT&T 3G service is lackluster.
Verizon Wireless is offering a monthly access plan to iPad customers of
up to 1GB of data for just $20 a month. In addition, Verizon
will also offer all three iPad Wi-Fi models on a stand-alone basis.
This is probably a good move for Apple, getting the iPad into another
major sales channel just as Windows 7 and Android tablets are also
landing. When you think about it, now Verizon will be selling both the
Android-based Galaxy Tab and the iPad. We wonder which one will sell
