Upcoming Rage Update To Improve Texture Detail

One of the frustrating things about Rage is the tremendous difference between the game's visuals. Some areas and scenes are simply gorgeous, particularly if you use a customized configuration file to further improve graphic fidelity. Others are pig-ugly, with textures that apparently crawled into the art resources straight from Half-Life. What's most distracting is that the two types of art assets often put in an appearance right next to each other.


Compare the box at right with the other surface textures.

Carmack has tweeted that an upcoming patch will help alleviate the issue, saying "We have a bicubic-upsample+detail texture option for the next PC patch that will help alleviate the blurry textures in Rage." Those of you who've followed Rage know that it's possible to improve image quality by forcing the game to use 8K or 16K textures, but Carmack also indicates there's a reason this doesn't help much with the biggest problem areas. "our first test of a higher res page file didn't help much, because most source textures didn't actually have any more detail."

This is precisely the sort of issue that makes sense on the XBox 360 or PS3, but should've been fixed before the PC version of the game shipped. Hopefully Doom 4 doesn't suffer from the same fate.

"I remember someone in the forum mentioning that anyone that buys and plays Rage is basically a beta tester for Doom 4, so hopefully none of the issue that a plaguing this game will make it to Doom cause I'm not playing FPS's on consoles no more, Black Ops is awesome, but I have gotten spoiled by BF3 on the PC."

I haven't even gone back to playing Rage yet and I only gave it a solid thirty minutes of playtime. Still having a blast playing Oblivion with added mods.

This is what id needs to keep doing. It's a gorgeous engine that's hampered right now. I've played it some and I actually don't completely agree with Joel's review article now. LOL :) Guess that's what makes the world go 'round.

"What type of set up do you use for gaming, AMD or Nvidia? Did you experience the texture artifacts and the screen tearing during the game?"

"I kind of new it, lol. I bet Marco still has that ASUS Mars II in his rig. I have not seen one person show off that card anywhere, I only see Hardware Website owners and staff showing off , a couple have it in sli. If you check newegg , there is not one verified owner. I think Asus has made a big flop, especially with competition from the 6990, and  the 590 that's always sold out, they are going to have a hard time selling them, especially with that outrageous price."
