TomTom To Offer Lifetime Map Updates

TomTom To Offer Lifetime Map Updates

Following in the footsteps of Google, Navigon, and Nextar, TomTom is promising free map updates for select GPS navigation systems starting in the second quarter of this year. Although details as to which models will be included in this offer are scant at this point, TomTom tells us that the updates will be available to users by simply connecting their navigation devices to TomTom HOME. Registered users will be notified of map updates as they become available. TomTom uses Tele Atlas maps, which are generally updated on a quarterly basis.

Feature to be incorporated in wide range of TomTom devices throughout 2010

CONCORD, Mass. -- TomTom, the world’s leading provider of navigation solutions and digital maps, today announces that it will offer Lifetime Map Updates, a feature that allows customers to automatically receive map updates as they become available. This feature will be incorporated into a range of TomTom products in 2010.

“Roads are continually changing - from new street names to closed bridges - so it’s important for users to always have the most up-to-date maps,” said Jocelyn Vigreux, president of TomTom Inc. “With the introduction of Lifetime Map Updates, customers can rest assured that the directions their TomTom device provides will always be the most accurate and efficient available.”

Highest Quality Maps

TomTom Lifetime Map Updates utilize Tele Atlas maps, which are continually updated to include improvements on 6.5 million miles of roads, millions of Points of Interest and map updates and speed profile data generated by the millions of drivers in the TomTom US user community. Tele Atlas’ comprehensive network of global resources - ranging from government documents to satellite and aerial imagery, in conjunction with continuous input from TomTom’s user community enable TomTom to deliver the highest quality maps to its users.

I wonder if there will be a way to buy-into the lifetime maps, or if others have to keep paying $40 a year. I just bought the wife one for Xmas... :( If I have to buy a new device to get free maps, I would consider their competition equally - even though I actually like the TomTom unit.

So if it's SO BLOODY IMPORTANT, why not just give to all TomTom users? Older devices as well?

They may be headed in that direction anyway, but the company that does it for all of it's users first is the one that will get the 'JUICE' in my book.

With cars starting to come with internet access and GPS.... and now free updates(which should have been free to begin with)

It shouldn't be too long before automatic updates direct to your car everytime you hop in. It'd be nice to be notified the day of that a road is closed on your route. :-)

Realneil, at least they're one step ahead of Garmin. No lifetime update announcements from them as yet.
